About this listen

A new mess. A new mystery. It’s up to Molly the maid to uncover the truth, no matter how dirty, in this standalone novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maid, a Good Morning America Book Club pick.

“Polished to perfection!”—Shari Lapena, author of Everyone Here Is Lying

“Lives up to the hype . . . both a delightful whodunit and a pointed social commentary.”—The Washington Post

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: PopSugar, Harper’s Bazaar, Chicago Public Library, CrimeReads, Bookreporter

Molly Gray is not like anyone else. With her flair for cleaning and proper etiquette, she has risen through the ranks of the glorious five-star Regency Grand Hotel to become the esteemed Head Maid. But just as her life reaches a pinnacle state of perfection, her world is turned upside down when J. D. Grimthorpe, the world-renowned mystery author, drops dead—very dead—on the hotel’s tearoom floor.

When Detective Stark, Molly’s old foe, investigates the author’s unexpected demise, it becomes clear that this death was murder most foul. Suspects abound, and everyone wants to know: Who killed J. D. Grimthorpe? Was it Lily, the new Maid-in-Training? Or was it Serena, the author’s secretary? Could Mr. Preston, the hotel’s beloved doorman, be hiding something? And is Molly really as innocent as she seems?

As the high-profile death threatens the hotel’s pristine reputation, Molly knows she alone holds the key to unlocking the killer’s identity. But that key is buried deep in her past, as long ago, she knew J. D. Grimthorpe. Molly begins to comb her memory for clues, revisiting her childhood and the mysterious Grimthorpe mansion where she and her dearly departed Gran once worked side by side. With the entire hotel under investigation, Molly must solve the mystery posthaste. Because if there’s one thing she knows for sure, it’s that secrets don’t stay buried forever.

Editorial Review

Golly Miss Molly
What would the world of mysteries and thrillers be without Molly Gray? The Maid with the mostest, so much so that she’s now Head Maid. Nita Prose takes us a little back in time and lets us in on some family secrets Molly’s loving Gran took with her to the grave. We also learn what put Molly on the path of her beloved vocation. But now a famous author has dropped dead in the hotel’s tearoom and everyone’s a suspect. Molly knows something others don’t know—the dead man. Lauren Ambrose once again delivers Molly to us in all of her empathy and charm and crisp enunciation. I enjoyed this audiobook so much that I worked out longer at the gym. That’s true love. —Yvonne D., Audible Editor

Molly is an interesting character.

The writing is just too simple and predictable. The narrator is weak, not even an accent for the Hispanic boyfriend. Just average though well meaning.

Very enjoyable story that kept me gripped in this mystery where once again a maid was involved.

Molly’s Continued Devotion

It was so nice to revisit Molly and go back into the hotel with her. I just love that she is a person who sees things literally and that she follows what is right to do in life at all times. It is so refreshing to listen to a person like that.

I thought the storyline was very good. The mystery was great and performance excellent!

Molly is back!

I found this sequel to be in some ways a bit more somber than the debut novel. In this book we get a deeper glimpse into Molly’s childhood, some parts of which are a little sad. Nevertheless, she triumphs in her characteristic, detail-oriented style. A solid read. Looking forward to the next one!

Another treat from N Prose

continuing the adventures of Molly Gray, this sequel is every bit as charming, funny and entertaining with its gentle twists. The narrator is spot on.

A fun Cozy Mystery but needs better narration

This was a cute and cozy follow up for book 2. Not as great as the first but still thoroughly enjoyed it! However, this is clearly based in the UK so I don’t understand why they don’t have a British narrator for Molly. Some characters have British accents that go in and out and then several have no accent at all or a New York type accent. It’s very confusing and I would like SOME continuity with accents. I do like how the narrator does Molly’s tone and she portrays Molly’s character well through her voice.

Carbon copy of the first book

I can’t imagine reading another book in this series, unless it takes the charm from these ones, and gives Molly a new life with new experiences and insights. Too much repetition, too predictable.

Tried it

It read kinda like teen fiction. The continuous she said was annoying at times. The plot was predictable. I don’t usually pick these type of books. The main character was a little too OCD for me.
