Publisher's summary

As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences, learning how to talk civilly to people whose views she disagrees with passionately. Famously "nice", she even gave a TED Talk about what she termed emotional correctness. But these days, even Kohn has found herself wanting to breathe fire at her enemies. It was time, she decided, to look into the ugliness erupting all around us.

In The Opposite of Hate, Kohn talks to leading scientists and researchers, investigating the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how simple incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She travels to Rwanda, to the Middle East, and across the United States, introducing us to terrorists, white supremacists, and even some of her own Twitter trolls, drawing surprising lessons from these dramatic examples - including inspiring stories of those who left hate behind.

As Kohn boldly confronts her own shameful moments, whether it's the girl she bullied as a child or her own deep partisan resentment, she points the way toward change. No one is more poised to lead us out of this wilderness of hate than Sally Kohn. Her engaging, fascinating, and often funny book will open your eyes and your heart.

A learning experience.

This book provided an opportunity for me to rethink how I looked at hate and really take a close look at my own biases. Prior to this reading, I didn't really recognize many of my own biases.

Profoundly insightful, important, and digestible.

What a masterpiece! At just the moment needed, Ms Kohn has provided a deep and wide-ranging inquiry into hate, conflict, divisions - and the way out. Should be required reading for anyone living in a society - anywhere. Fundamental insight.

Enlightening

I've always considered myself an unbiased person and truly loved how she brought a new understanding in me that my first reaction to individuals may contradict this. I am more aware of this and will strive to bring connection in my community. We need the Opposite of Hate in this world now more than ever and you won't regret listening to her emphatic narration.

You should read (open mindedness)

Fantastic research in the book. Gives you pause to reflect on how we live. Can be controversial, but recommended. Provocative.

the solution is found in conversation

Fascinating topic, that is certainly timely and urgent. Sally Kohn does a great review not only of the literature and science of hate, oppression, and reparation, but she also provides a succinct and compelling argument for Bridging the Gap. it is through maintaining our diversity, but connecting along the lines of our commonality, that we create and maintain a sense of oneness, and as such lay the foundation two working together against hate and towards humanity..

Excellent product! Oneness via inclusion.

It validates my perception of Oneness, built by inclusion to diminish exclusion, through practices of connection.

a truthful look at hate

the secret to completing this book is keeping your mind open to what is being said. It is Well written and has marvelous if not horrific examples of hate. There's even a way to address people who you do not agree with completely on ideas that evoke a negative or positive response. Enjoy this book and ruminate on its message. Sincerely, Carmelo.

No matter your political affiliation....

This book will teach you AT LEAST one thing... if not 50. We can learn more about reconciliation by examining hate, than love. That sounds hopeless, but it’s not.

Bravo Sally Kohn! Laughed & Cried!

This book is so honest, raw and even more needed today than its original publication date. Kohn is funny, animated and REAL! Normally I struggle getting through works of non-fiction. I didn’t want to walk away from the stories. Bravo to Sally Kohn for this inspirational, hope-filled book.
