About this listen

A heartfelt and exceptionally human novel about the best mistakes a person can make.

Jonathan and Rosie have been together so long they finish each other's sentences - so when he (finally) proposes and asks her to move across the country with him, everyone is happily surprised. But when things suddenly unravel, Rosie sends Jonathan packing and moves back home with Soapie, the irascible, opinionated grandmother who raised her.

Now she has to figure out how to fire Soapie's very unsuitable caregiver, a gardener named Tony who lets her drink martinis, smoke, and cheat at Scrabble. It's meant to be a temporary break, of course - until Rosie realizes she's accidentally pregnant at 44, completely unequipped for motherhood, and, worse, may be falling in love with Tony, whose life is even more muddled than hers.

When Soapie reveals a long-hidden secret, Rosie wonders if she has to let go of her fears and trust that the big-hearted, messy life that awaits her just may be the one she was meant to live.

just do something

Funny, exasperating ( if this were my "boyfriend he would have been gone long ago).
Do as your Grandma says " live life to the fullest. " It all goes by so quickly. Do something that makes you happy!

Emotionally mixed

There are a lot of good things about the story in this book. What I find difficult was the heroine was so negative about everything. She eventually sorts herself out but I found it difficult to listen to her agonizing and always searching for and
finding the cloud behind every silver lining. I gave up listening about 2/3 through and went to the end to see what happened. And the ending was the best part.

Not bad; had me coming back.

I did like this book better than I thought I would. I enjoyed the typical scenarios of life as it is in the current world. Nice array of characters Nice to hear an account of a forty some year old unexpectedly pregnant with her first child and trying to figure it out in her newly changing world.

It' s all right.

This book was okay but it took forever for things to happen and then when they finally did, the book was over. I don't like books as much if they don't flesh out the ending. I felt like I waited a long time for a resolution and then, bye Felicia. Come on, couldn't you have given us one more chapter? My review would have been much better.

Family can be a complicated concept.

"May the best man win."
Not getting married during their first decade was a big clue about not wanting to commit (to each other).

Life and All It Brings

Great story about life and all its complications. Maddie Dawson tells a tale that most all can relate to at some point in our lives, loved this story! Narration was on point and very personal.

Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans!

I’ve enjoyed so many stories by Maddie Dawson, but The Opposite of Maybe is one of my favorites. The character development in this story is exceptional! Tony’s sunny optimism is a welcome balance to the melancholy of some of the other characters, and I appreciate how the author teases out the idea that just because we’re comfortable with our lives, doesn’t mean we’re truly happy.

Well written book. The characters grow on you~

This was a very different book. The beginning...honestly, I thought I’d end up just not finishing. The characters were odd, and without depth. And the story was weird too. But like a river that moves through a desolate place and changes scenery and pace, this book will move you. The way the characters were brought to life and described, almost artistically, with layers of nuances & grit. Well defined. I laughed often...and cried a bit. I’ll definitely listen again!

I hate I waisted my money!

I personally wanted to slap the main character! She never grew up! She expected everyone to take care of her! I would not recommend this book!
