About this listen

One of CrimeReads’ Most Anticipated Crime Books of 2021

Longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier 2021 Crime Novel of the Year

The “queen of the sucker-punch twist” (Ruth Ware, number-one New York Times best-selling author) and author of Our House weaves an unputdownable pause-resister about a commuter who becomes a suspect in his friend’s mysterious disappearance.

It all happens so quickly. One day you’re living the dream, commuting to work by ferry with your charismatic neighbor Kit in the seat beside you. The next, Kit hasn’t turned up for the boat and his wife, Melia, has reported him missing.

When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends - ask Melia, she’ll vouch for you. And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger? What do they know about your lives?

No, whatever danger followed you home last night, you are innocent, totally innocent.

Aren’t you?

Critic reviews

"Mackintosh keeps Jamie believably innocent. His portrayals of women are intelligent and believable. When things heat up, you can almost hear Jamie's heart pounding in Mackintosh's voice. Candlish brings extraordinary psychological insights into play, and Mackintosh delivers the emotions." (AudioFile Magazine)

Very slow start but the ending is a 10/10!
Can’t wait for the movie or TV adaptation.

Slow but the ending is worth it.

I’ve been trying to nail down why this book did not appeal to me. I think I’ve determined that if I read it I may have liked it more but the narrator made every character whiny or smug and it just really distracted from being able to root for anyone. I think that the story itself is good.

Ok. I think the narration is off

I’m familiar with professional voice work, and the narrator’s mouth noise that comes through due to his microphone positioning was almost enough to cause me to stop listening before I finished the book. Extremely distracting.

Narrator’s mouth noise is unprofessional

Kept me guessing until the end. Great writing and great narration. Feels like I know these characters, and I'm still shocked by some of the things they've done. I will definitely read this one again.

lots of twists and turns

This was my third book by this author. I think others might have received more acclaim, but I thought this was by far the best. Excellent plot (you might see some of the twists coming, but not all of them). Excellent characters (some exquisitely despicable). Very entertaining. Plus, flawless performances! Great job. Thank you!

Absolutely excellent

Someone said the narration was bad… huh? It was great. Maybe ppl should try adjusting their devices because I heard no unpleasant noises. Someone occasionally “swallowing” isn’t worthy of taking off several stars. Geez. Also, I identified with the mental health issues mentioned in the book and really enjoyed hearing good writing ….really good writing . The story was interesting and kept me engaged.
Ppl are really hateful when they review. That isn’t necessary.

Wonderful👏👏👏

pretty good read. I'd recommend it but its another really bad audio. every 19 seconds all you hear is smacking lips and swallowing. it was pretty bad to have to listen to for 10 hours. but I was into the book so I finished. you've been warned.

Another terrible audio performance

it was a good story. a little hard to follow sometimes.

a huge pet peeve when hearing audible books, is hearing people with saliva and hat slurping or swallowing sound.

Good Story

Your one sentence reviews show up in the first line. Thanks for ruining a much anticipated pre-order for us just because you hated it.
On the other hand I liked it, and am grateful for this audio-book, it made my flight less boring. And we all know how important that is when flying in the US, among such considerate classy and sophisticated people we have living in this country. Especially people who *don’t ruin the book for you. I enjoyed the the narration and the suspenseful story line. I am sure you will too if you give it an honest listen.
