A Navajo Ranger’s chilling and clear-eyed memoir of his investigations into bizarre cases of the paranormal and unexplained in Navajoland

As a Native American with parents of both Navajo and Cherokee descent, Stanley Milford Jr. grew up in a world where the supernatural was both expected and taboo, where shapeshifters roamed, witchcraft was a thing to be feared, and children were taught not to whistle at night.

In his youth, Milford never went looking for the paranormal, but it always seemed to find him. When he joined the fabled Navajo Rangers—a law enforcement branch of the Navajo Nation who are equal parts police officers, archeological conservationists, and historians—the paranormal became part of his job. Alongside addressing the mundane duties of overseeing the massive 27,000-square-mile reservation, Milford was assigned to utterly bizarre and shockingly frequent cases involving mysterious livestock mutilations, skinwalker and Bigfoot sightings, UFOs, and malicious hauntings.

In The Paranormal Ranger, Milford recounts the stories of these cases from the clinical and deductive perspective of a law enforcement officer. Milford’s Native American worldview and investigative training collide to provide an eerie account of what logic dictates should not be possible.

Paranormal storytelling with great depth

The author narrator felt palpably present, heartfelt,. His storytelling was detailed, vivid, and drew me into his real life experiences. He spoke of some paranormal phenomena I hadn't heard of before. Then he.concluded with keen insights about all that he had witnessed.

Wonderful Bio of A Paranormal Ranger

This is a lovely and touching biography of Stanley Milford Jr. He shares stories of his culture, his childhood and his path into law enforcement. WE learn the about patrolling the reservation and his investigations of cryptids and the paranormal. In his culture, they are taken quite seriously and he notes several notable cases. The ending was a bit sad, but I am glad he's found fulfillment in his retirement. It has brought more recognition (that he wasn't looking for), but more satisfaction in assisting others. The author narrates his book. I hope he shares more stories.

Interesting and informative

Many good stories and insights. The cadence of the author is a bit slow as he is reading but I became accustomed to it. If you are familiar with the paranormal many stories will be familiar but this is a good introduction for a newbie.

Highly Recommend!

I've lived and worked in many of these places. I also grew up on a neighboring reservation, so I'm very familiar with the New Mexico and Arizona places discussed. I've also heard about Mr. Milford over the years. I am glad he wrote a book about his experiences. I like how he has discussed his training and role within the Tribe as well.

Also, 1000 thanks for having the author read the story. I have listened to other books by Native authors but the narrator was non-Native. The pronunciation of places was totally butchered in those audio books. He was the perfect narrator for his work.

A little warning for those of us living on Rez; don't listen to this at night....lol...I freaked myself out when I noticed the sun was down. It was that good, I finished in 3 days! I did recommend this to all my friends. My mom was able to get her book copy autographed in Durango. It is great he is doing local book tours.

Surprising Insights

Highly recommend. This book was well rounded and put together. I thought I would be listening to a book primarily about the paranormal. But it was so much more than that! I highly recommend this book!
