About this listen

Smith and Trowbridge describe the flavor of their five-book space opera Exordium as a cross between Star Wars and Dangerous Liaisons with a touch of the Three Stooges. With its fast-moving blend of humor and horror, of high-tech skiffy and the deep places of the human heart, The Phoenix in Flight launches the reader into a complex, multi-layered universe as Brandon nyr-Arkad, dissolute youngest son of the ruler of the Thousand Suns, abandons the life of service planned for him and flees into the lawless Rift.

Only slowly does he discover that the world he rejected now lies in smoking ruins as the ritual vengeance of Jerrode Eusabian against Brandon’s father, twenty years in preparation, culminates in an explosion of interstellar violence. With both his brothers dead and his father the Panarch imprisoned, Brandon becomes the Panarchy's last hope.

Editorial reviews

James Patrick Cronin’s vibrant and dynamic performance catapults the listener to the far-flung galaxies of this first volume of Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridge’s sprawling, five-part intergalactic space saga, which finds our devil-may-care hero Krysarch Brandon nyr-Arkad, the youngest son of Emperor Gelsaar, pitted against the nefarious Jerrode Eusabian, who’s hell-bent on exacting revenge against The Thousand Suns.

Whether capturing the nuances of the Dol’jharian dialect or the violent tendencies of volatile space orcs, Cronin’s superb delivery elevates this exhilarating blend of hard sci-fi and fantasy.

this is probably an amazing book if I could finish

I really wanted to like this book, but listening to the narrator was like listening to a robot read it. to clarify, I don't mean that in a good way, because as a nerd, I love science fiction and robots. I mean that in a negative way, unfortunately. I really tried to listen to this book, as I have had it as an audiobook in my collection for several years now, but I just can't seem to get through it because of the narrator. That almost feels childish to say, as I love great fiction of any kind and the story should keep me captivated despite what the narrator sounds like. I don't know if this reveals me as petty or shallow, but it is what it is. I don't wish to give offense to anyone that likes this narrator or to the narrator himself. I find that he enunciates well and does a remarkably good job with the alien names and his pronunciation in general... sorry the relentless monotone is too much for me.
