About this listen

An expert on the psychology of leadership and the best-selling author of Integrity, Necessary Endings, and Boundaries for Leaders identifies the critical ingredient for personal and professional well-being.

Most leadership coaching focuses on helping leaders build their skills and knowledge and close performance gaps. These are necessary but not sufficient. Using evidence from neuroscience and his work with leaders, Dr. Henry Cloud shows that the best performers draw on another vital resource: personal and professional relationships that fuel growth and help them surpass current limits.

Popular wisdom suggests that we should not allow others to have power over us, but the reality is that they do, for better or for worse. Consider the boss who diminishes you through cutting remarks versus one who challenges you to get better. Or the colleague who always seeks the limelight versus the one who gives you the confidence to finish a difficult project. Or the spouse who is honest and supportive versus the one who resents your success. No matter how talented, intelligent, or experienced, the greatest leaders share one commonality: the power of the others in their lives.

Combining engaging case studies, persuasive findings from cutting-edge brain research, and examples from his consulting practice, Dr. Cloud argues that whether you're a Navy SEAL or a corporate executive, outstanding performance depends on having the right kind of connections to fuel personal growth and minimize toxic associations and their effects. Presenting a dynamic model of the impact these different kinds of connections produce, Dr. Cloud shows listeners how to get more from themselves by drawing on the strength and expertise of others. You don't have a choice whether or not others have power in your life, but you can choose what kinds of relationships you want.

Great Guide book on Maneuvering through life.

I enjoyed this audio book so much I'm gonna purchase the physical book to have in my library. It's also a book that I'm gonna give as future wedding gifts to aid in marriages and rearing children. It's definitely a guide book of sorts for establishing relationships. It's a book one needs to read in high school.

Practical and filled with great ideas

Some books are so good, you have to take notes, slow them down, and ruminate over the ideas - to stop the book and think about what was just said because you never want to forget it. This is just such a book.
There are fantastic statements from the author that should be plastered over the web.
Here’s an example: “You don’t understand someone when you THINK you understand them. You understand them when THEY understand that you understand them. That is the beginning of trust.”
You won’t be disappointed by this book.

Great Book!

Thus book talks about the power of connections and how to determine which connection you foster with others. Often times we have a pseudo connection that we believe is real, but it is not. Great read!

Quickly summarizes thoughtful ideas

I enjoyed the overall agenda of teaching influence and how impressionable we, humans are. Although more specific examples besides the overdrawn Steve Jobs story would be astounding.

good stuff

I loved learning about Corner 4 relationships. I didn't enjoy all of the sports analogies as are so often used in self-help books. I want something more relevant to everyday life but the message in this book was exactly what I needed as I am moving into new ventures in my life.
