Publisher's summary

'The most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary.'

The Promises of Giants is an exploration of the practices and behaviours that define transformational leadership. It is a challenge, not only to those in named positions of power but to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. A challenge to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way.

From socio-political chaos and workplace disruption to the climate change crisis, we have never needed people with the skill and will to collaborate to create a better world more than now. We need people who are willing to fill the leadership void. People who will embrace the influence they have. People who believe in improving society and workplace culture - not only because it makes life better, but because it is proven to yield positive results.

We need more leaders.

The Promises of Giants is a challenge to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. Over 14 promises, it seamlessly intertwines personal anecdotes and workplace and social observation with the latest research, to provide practical, proven tips and strategies to empower you to maximise your own potential and inspire others. It is not a self-help book. It is a how-to guide for winning, rooted in the belief that the most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary.

John Amaechi well understands the responsibilities and potential that come with being a giant. The Promises of Giants is the product of a lifetime spent observing and studying effective leadership - from accompanying his mother's visits to her dying patients to competing at the highest levels of professional sport, through two decades of management consulting with multinational corporations. These experiences have shown that everyone has the ability to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way. Everyone is a giant to someone.

I love John Amaechi

The combination of voice and wisdom is rivalled only by my recent listening to Obama's book. I was introduced John through The Lebatard Show and find him and this book to be a guide leaders should aspire to in work and in life.

The first leadership book in a long while

This is the first leadership book in a long while that touched me as a human being, not just a leader. A must read.

Masterful and Impactful

The author has very personal and relatable stories and the content and subject matter are dense. You will reread and think, reread and think before you can move on. This book has changed how I think about my interactions within my team, but also with the world at large and everyone around me. Super impactful and a book I will think about for many many years to come.

Fascinating, compelling and supremely useful

This is one of the few books that has deeply changed my way of thinking and working.
I own 278 titles on Audible and this one squarely falls within the top 3 most important. It is a masterclass in better management, of yourself and of others.

To the Author John: thank you for such a beautiful book. I will cherish it and share it with anyone willing to listen.

Unbelievably powerful

In my exposure to resources on leadership, equity, and self reflection, this particular book, this author, has brings those topics together in an unbelievably powerful and effective way. John is also a fantastic reader of his own work, which makes it even more impactful and engaging. I listen and relisten to elements of this book as I evolve in my own role leading an organization. I'm humbled and greatful for what he shares with the rest of us about life and leadership.
