Story
On its release, Steven Smith's first book, The Reversion, became an instant classic in the preparedness/ survival/TEOTWAWKI genre. But the reviews and growing readership proved that it was more. It transcended its original target audience to appeal to many who had no previous interest in survivalism or preparedness as a lifestyle and made the jump to general adventure fiction. The reasons for this were several. It was well written, expansive in scope yet easy to follow. It told an interesting, compelling, story - intricate in its construction but smooth in its presentation. It introduced ...

In his first novel, The Reversion, Steven Smith took the modern post-apocalyptic genre to a new level of general fiction, introducing us to a world after a cataclysmic collapse and taking us into the lives of those who survive and begin to rebuild. In his second novel, The Revival, he once again broke a barrier into adventure fiction, mixing humor and intense action with social commentary, political philosophy and in-depth examinations of comparative justice and cultural constructs - all skillfully woven into a compelling story of personal and societal survival so as to be both powerful yet...

Writing the Stonemont series has been one of the most enjoyable and challenging things I have ever done. And for that I thank you, the reader. When I first started writing what became The Reversion, the first book in the series, I had no idea it would become a book. When it did become a book, I had no idea there would be a second book, and when I finished the second book, I had no idea it would become a series. And now, here we are. One thing I have particularly enjoyed about writing the Stonemont series is that I have been able to teach principles of preparedness and survival to so many ...

Author's Note - As I have mentioned in past books, this is a sequel to the previous and should be read after the others; The Reversion, The Revival and The Renewal, in order to fully understand it. My reason for this is simple; I’ve always found it tedious to read re-introductions of situations and characters, and so have no desire to write them. For those who have read the first three books in this series, you may have seen that I intended to title this one The Blessings of Freedom and make it the first in a new series called the New America series - my reason being that the action ...

In this evolving mix, Stonemont and their allies must navigate the ever-changing dynamics of friends and enemies - and attempt to build a new place in the world where people can live free.

The book is amazing
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
This book is what I hope for in the genre. Too many are a gore-fest, or full of one dimensional psychopaths making up most of the characters. This seems more “realistic”. There are some pretty bad people, but it’s not all about that. It’s about how to be the good people, how to manage situations which are probable in a catastrophic situation.
It has given me some idea of goals for my “prepper light” general plans. I especially liked the idea of designing a garage or specific rooms with a faraday cage to protect against an EMP.
Virtual Voice is getting better, but it’s still not great. An AR-15 is often called an “R” or “Are” … and a .22 or .380 is a “point two two” and “point three eight zero” which kinda throws you off at first, and is a constant reminder that this is virtual voice with no real brain. Also the usual inflection issues you’ll know if you listen to many things in virtual voice. There is probably some kind of editing which should be done if a book is going to be narrated with virtual voice in which the text is changed so it will read how a human would know to read it, but the virtual voice mistakes are fairly consistent across a multitude of books so it seems a “find and replace” for commonly mispronounced words could be done to change .22 to “twenty-two” as a normal prep for virtual voice narration.
A cut above in the apocalypse genre
