About this listen

Grace Chu is an American-educated Chinese national now working as a forensic accountant after serving in the Chinese army as an intelligence officer. John Knox is an American who parlayed his military service during the first Iraqi war into a lucrative import/export business, which now provides him the official access he needs to work freelance undercover operations throughout the world. Both are highly skilled operatives capable of deft subterfuge or extreme violence, if circumstances require.

They meet for the first (but not last) time in Shanghai when the security firm they work for is hired to retrieve a kidnapped employee critical to the success of a multi-billion dollar real estate deal. But the stakes are high, and Grace and Knox find themselves at the center of a deadly international imbroglio.

good story

I thought the story was very good. in spite of the ready. I usually can ignore a reader and just listen to the story but everytime I went back to the book it was hard to get back into it. that said it was fast paced story and very enjoyable

Yikes horrible reader

I'm a Ridley Pearson fan but this is the first one I have listened to instead of reading.
Impossible for me to get passed the reader to see if I would enjoy the story.
I have listened to 100 plus books and I generally like the readers but this one was really a let down.

Ridley is back, but he wasn't far away.

I usually post my "Prayer Review" for Ridley Pearson's work. The past couple novels have been maybe half a star off the usual 5 only because it just seemed like maybe Mr. Pearson himself was a bit bored with, or tired of writing about Idaho. This whole China thing was fresh and I could tell it was fresh for him as well. The characters have room for a sequel and I hope he will do another book with Grace and Knox...maybe even with some of the supporting cast in there as well. If you are familiar with his work, this is as good as, or better than the great Lou Boldt series. If you aren't familiar with Mr. Pearson you just got a whole lot of good listening.
Tom Haberkorn was a very good performer for this. I think one of my best measures is that I didn't find myself noticing him a lot...which for this kind of work ,I consider high praise.

So-so story, annoying reader

I’m a long-time fan of Pearson’s books, but I’m sorry I wasted a credit on this one. More or less one long chase scene, and the “twists” were predictable. The reader has an annoying voice. Also, the story, such as it is, is left unresolved, no doubt so that the reader will buy the next book. I won’t be buying anything more in this series.
