Publisher's summary

This is your wake-up call to resist the Hustle culture and embrace the slowness of Jesus.

Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more.

In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic.

What we are doing isn't working!

In a society where hustle is the expectation, busyness is the norm and information is king, we have forgotten the fundamentals that make us human, anchor our lives, and provide meaning.

Jefferson Bethke, New York Times best-selling author and popular YouTuber, has lived the hustle and knows we need to stop doing and start becoming.

After listening to this book, you will discover:

  • How to proactively set boundaries in your life
  • How to get comfortable with obscurity
  • The best way to push back against the demands of contemporary life
  • The importance of embracing silence and solitude
  • How to handle the stressors that life throws at us

To Hell With the Hustle is for anyone who is:

  • Feeling overwhelmed with the demands of work, family and community
  • Wanting to connect and spend time with their family
  • Tired of being anxious, lonely, and burned out

Join Bethke as he discovers that the very things the world teaches us to avoid at all costs - silence, obscurity, solitude, and vulnerability - are the very things that can give us the meaning, and the richness we are truly looking for.

Nice reset

Very much needed for myself and everyone in American/Western society as it seemed mostly geared towards. Slow down, put your phone down, be present in every moment (no really present), be weary of your news media outlets. One of my favorite parts was him talking about people used to get a newspaper and it would be the same news for everyone and now people get different digital newspapers, to each their own, feeding their storylines and building more walls from each other.

Very Thought Provoking

Very researched and thought provoking read! It came out before the pandemic, but so many things brought up in this book were directly addressed through it!

A great perspective on our hurry up lifestyle.

A great perspective on how we are mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually killing ourselves. I think he has some great ideas, and some that are more easily attainable if you are a young family. Regardless, this is a springboard to help identify and creatively attack those areas that are stealing our time, a very precious commodity we can never get back. Jefferson puts words to the things I think many of feel but have a difficult time articulating, especially in regard to how we live with a lack of true community and love for our neighbor.

Simply Amazing

I love Jefferson Bethke. I’ve read “Jesus>Religion” and “It’s Not What You Think.” I’m perplexed time and time again at how the context of his books are exactly what I need to hear in that particular time in my life. This book was no different. Thank you Jefferson, may God continue to bless you and your family. Please don’t ever stop sharing your story because I know you’ve blessed and will continue to bless many lives, including mine.

Changed my perspective and priorities!

As a mom of 4 young kids, I am feeling pulled in many directions, including extracurricular activities, leading them to Jesus, church responsibilities, etc.
This book has helped me and my husband to reclaim our amrriage by banishing the phone and tv from our bedroom, seeking silence, and being intentional about choosing slow moments for our family. We've also begun honoring shabbat in our home! Make time in your schedule to read this. I believe you'll be glad you did!
Thank you, Jefferson, for this wake up call!

Powerful & Riveting

Jeff shows so much depth and maturity in this necessary and relevant take on how we should slow down. As someone who found him during his viral blow up several years ago, it's amazing to see how he's stayed the course. I'll probably listen to this annually!

Are we masters of time? Or slaves?

Jefferson Bethke came out swinging with this title. If you've followed his story (or read his previous books) you can feel the new depth and rich maturity that has come from fatherhood and marriage. It has enriched his communication in ways one might not have otherwise thought possible, considering his already profound reputation. This book was difficult to get through, in that every single page was deeply challenging to our common cultural norms. This is not a title to breeze through - one must regularly pause and take an introspective inventory. His use of historical and biblical references offer an educated perspective to the reader, while offering a comforting sense of hope toward what's ahead. I was deeply tested by the notion that in an effort to master time, we inadvertently became slaves to it. Bethke presses into the truth the Jesus was never in a hurry, but maintained a pace that pleased the Father and allowed Him to love closely those He came to serve. While he speaks against the modern-day hustle, he does not negate the value or the rightful place of hard work. I've been truly changed by this book and encourage anyone who feels trapped in the rat race, especially those with children, to make margin for this read. That small investment of time will surely reset the rhythm for the rest of your life.

Love love love!

I will need to listen to this book again to remind myself to slow down and take in what is most important in life. Our culture and our society has pushed us too far into the life of hustle. God does not want that for us and for our families. Trust in him to provide and be at peace with what he does provide. He has more in store for us then we know.
