Publisher's summary

A Union soldier risks everything to save the life of Abraham Lincoln, while a Confederate surgeon races through time to preserve Lincoln's legacy.

Reenactor Dr. Charlotte Mallory has spent years perfecting the portrayal of her ancestor, Civil War Confederate surgeon Major Carlton Mallory. In the middle of the 150th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek, she is hurled back in time and lands in the middle of the battle itself, and from there is catapulted into dangers that threaten her life and shatter her heart.

Charlotte is captured by Union soldiers during the battle and hauled before General Sheridan. The General only sees a Confederate surgeon who can solve a challenging problem for him, so he threatens Charlotte with the destruction of her 200-year-old ancestral home unless "he" agrees to rescue a Union spy from a Confederate hospital. To save her home and possibly her own life, she reluctantly agrees. After a harrowing journey to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, she finds her target, a handsome, green-eyed spy with a Minie ball in his gut and is now at death's door. Without a thought for long-term consequences, she returns with him to the future, where she has the technology to save his life.

While recovering from his gunshot wound in Charlotte's ancestral home, the spy, Major Michael Abraham "Braham" McCabe learns the man he works for, President Lincoln, was assassinated. Now Braham is determined to return to his century to prevent the assassination. When Charlotte refuses to help him, because it will change the future, he finds another way to get back to his own time.

Not accurate historically or present day

What did you love best about The Sapphire Brooch?

The adventure, the characters, the performance, the entertainment value.

Would you recommend The Sapphire Brooch to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes

What about Teri Schnaubelt’s performance did you like?

Great accents

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

If you are a Civil War buff, or just mildly educated about the Civil War, you will find some errors. She portrays the South in a pretty bad light and makes the North look like angels in the treatment of prisoners. Some of the Virginia geography is a bit off. Author also has a UVA hospital set in Richmond (it would be an MCV hospital).

Unique

Great story line with unique and unexpected twists and turns. Not the typical romance book endings

Epic Historical Romance set during Civil War

Any additional comments?

The Sapphire Brooch by Katherine Lowry Logan is an epic time travel historical romance set during the Civil War that is extremely satisfying. Katherine's writing style is similar to that of Dianna Gabaldon in the Outlander series, with well developed characters, a detailed plot, and a smoldering love story (much of which is behind "closed doors" without too many salacious details). As with the first book in the series, The Ruby Brooch, the characters are portrayed realistically with hopes, dreams, fears, and flaws.

The story centers around Dr. Charlotte Mallory who is a workaholic surgeon living and working in Virginia. On the rare occasion she ventures out of the hospital for fun, she enjoys participating in Civil War reenactments. It's during one of them - the 150th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek - when she is hurled back in time to the battle itself. Soon afterwards she meets President Lincoln, who personally asks Charlotte to save one of his friends and most important spy, Major Braham McCabe, who was fatally injured a few days ago. Charlotte does anything a woman of the 21st Century with a magical time travel device would do - she takes him back with her and administers the best medicine and treatments available in 2015. Braham only has one thing on his mind - to go back and put an end to the Civil War and to save President Lincoln's life.

I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by Teri Schnaubelt who did an excellent job. Her narration flows naturally, is easy to listen to, and each character has their own distinct voice. Teri's rendition substantially contributed to my enjoyment of the story. Simply put, this is one of the best books I've listened to all year!

Historical Hop

This book works well as a stand alone but I do have volume 1 of this story in my wish list.

This historical fiction, time traveling story takes place in present day and during the late Civil War including the assassination of President Lincoln. The historical aspects are seamlessly inserted into and drive the story of the fictional characters.

Ms Logan does a fabulous job of spinning the lives and personalities of the characters throughout the story. Both Charlotte and Brahmn are complex, headstrong, stubborn, dedicated and passionate about their jobs, and neither are looking for love. That is until fate in the form of a brooch intervenes.

Teri Schnaubelt, narrator, gave each character an unique sound & personality. She even made some of the men sound absolutely gorgeous.

Can't wait for the Emerald Brooch.

Great story a little hard to take when looking at what happened during the Civil War. Love Braham, Jack and Charlotte.
