Publisher's summary

A gripping family drama that brilliantly explores the relationship between a young girl and her dog - and the mysteries that lie within.

At the heart of this psychological suspense novel is the haunting depiction of a family's fall and the extraordinary gifted dog, Caity, who knows the truth. As the drama unfolds, Caity evolves from protector to savior, from scapegoat to prop, and eventually from avenger to survivor. She is an unselfish soul in a selfish world - and she is written with depth and grace by authors Ketchum and Mckee, who display a profound understanding of a dog's complex emotions. With her telling instincts and her capacity for joy and transformative love, Caity joins the pantheon of great dogs in contemporary literature.

Eleven-year-old actress Delia Cross is beautiful, talented, charismatic. A true a star in the making. Her days are a blur of hard work on set, auditions, and tutors. Her family - driven, pillpopping stage mother Pat; wastrel dad Bart; and introverted twin brother Robbie - depends on her for their upscale lifestyle. Delia in turn depends on Caity, her beloved ginger Queensland Heeler - and loyal friend - for the calming private space they share. Delia is on the verge of a professional breakthrough. But just as the contracts are about to be signed, there is a freak accident that puts Delia in the danger zone with only Caity to protect her.

Excellent Horror / Family Drama Tale

Would you listen to The Secret Life of Souls again? Why?

Yes It was a short sweet listen that will be easy for me to pick up again.

Any additional comments?

I've Read numerous books by Ketchum and have really enjoyed them. Particularly his novels that are more grounded in real life, like Red and The Girl Next Door. The Secret Life of Souls pulls a lot of the same strings. Not at all as brutal as some of Ketchum's writings but there are a few scenes that lay it all out there and they seam all the more horrific because the characters feel so real.

Miss Turner does an excellent job narrating the tale.

Delia and her dog Catie are fantastic. I Highly recommend this listen to horror lovers, drama lovers, or just dog lovers.

Not what I expected...

I am a dog lover, and there are many things about this book that I appreciate. There are violent moments towards the dog that was upsetting that ruined it for me. I also feel like there wasn't much of an ending. It leaves me frustrated and without any resolution

Karma's a Bitch

This one's been sitting in my wish list for a while. Finally got it during a promotional, and am I glad I did.... It's a very tight family drama w/ the obligatory disfuntional characters, but atypical in the viewpoints and perspectives taken... Reminds me a lot of Jodi Picoult in flavor and intent... The relationships and twists of fate are done well, and the characters are full and vivid... Although, gotta say, that Mom sure is unlikeable;). As unlikeable as she is Katie is just as lovable and impressive... Little bit of magical realism weaved throughout the story, but done so subtly you hardly realize it;). The suspense is measured and placed just right, oh, and what an ending... Then what an ending after the ending... Little slow start, but not too bad until it does get rolling... Excellent narration!! Nice easy read and worth the credit...

I have truly become a Jack Ketchum and Lucky Mckee fan!

This book shows the tremendous range of Jack Ketchum and Lucky McKee. I read there first collaboration "The Woman", which I absolutely loved, but in a very different way. That book speaks to the horror, gore fanatic in me.
"The Secret Life of Souls" has some elements of horror for sure, but for the most part it's just a beautiful story about a dysfunctional family. The parents are incredibly self involved, the brother resentful, the daughter and her dog always trying to please and then tragedy strikes * NO SPOILERS*.

I highly recommend this book!

Annoying characters

I was looking forward to this book after reading the summary, but it didn't live up to the expectation. The characters are one dimensional and missing detail that could make them more real. Also, the storyline was easily anticipated.

Hated It!

The reason I hated this story is because I was not expecting the tone. It caught me off guard. It was a horror story disguised as a family novel. And yes, I hated it!

I was Loving it Until...

I really loved the first part of this book, a story about an exceptional girl who is an eleven year old actress with a pushy, manipulative stage mother. The most intriguing character in the story is the dog, Katie. The authors have written an excellent portrayal of the inner life of an intelligent and devoted pet. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Until it became brutally, graphically violent. And that's when I started to hate this book. The narrator is excellent but I could never recommend this book. If you read it anyway, don't say you weren't warned.
