About this listen

Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard.

But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees. Michael pines for normalcy, and he's sure that someday he'll see the world beyond West Virginia. When he meets Alice, a pretty girl working at a record shop in the small nearby town of Dahlia, he's immediately smitten. For a moment he nearly forgets about the monster he's become. But his brother, Rebel, is all too eager to remind Michael of his place....

"This relentlessly grim tale is most definitely not for the squeamish, but it's nearly impossible to put down." ( Publishers Weekly)

I have listened to a lot of horror. A lot. This is one of the first few books that made me nearly sick. It’s scary because it’s something that could happen. The monsters in it could exist, and there are people like this who likely do exist. And it all happens to someone who doesn’t really deserve it. I finished it because the story is well done. But man. It’s gut wrenching. If you have a sensitive stomach stay away.

This book is revolting.

Pain. Boat loads of pain. Nothing could have prepared me. This may be one of the best books I’ve ever read, but it destroyed me. Such a perfect mix of horror and psychological thriller. I honestly can’t really convey the shock and pain I am feeling after reading this story. I will recommend this book exclusively to people who are into horror and who are okay with gore but I wish that the structure, calculated planning, character development, beautiful writing, and timing of this story could be experienced by all. Horror, for the sake of horror has always bored me; writing a few adjective-fueled, disturbing/disgusting scenes for shock value is tired writing, in my opinion: Brother is not this type of story. Brother began with an ending—and with brutal honesty. It held me captive to experience the trauma of the narrators, side-by-side, forcing me to adapt, hope, and empathize with them even with the knowledge I was given in the first page. For this book, hope is a thing with torn-off wings, pleading for anything but the end that only a few know is coming. 4.8/5

Not for the faint of heart....but I loved this book! Well written with great character development. I was taken by surprise by some elements while others were mildly predictable but even with that this is an awesome read.

Great read!

..like a train wreck you can't look away from. Disturbing and descriptive, suspenseful. Read trigger warnings before reading.

Couldn't put it down...

Made me rather sad but very well written and narrated. Not too gory surprisingly considering the subject matter.

really good

I enjoyed this Audio book immensely. It was the written in the style I've always loved. Great storyline, but tragic at the same time. I hope to find many more similar books like this one.

Great Story

I’m a fan of psychological thrillers and graphic crime novels so this was right up my alley. The story grabbed my attention from the first chapter and the last two chapters left me reeling. Heartache, pain, loneliness, dysfunction and …. Love?

The narration wasn’t the best but I upped the narration speed to 1.2 and that helped a lot.

Absolutely recommend this book for those that like darker subjects.

Raw and Tense
