About this listen

Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard.

But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees. Michael pines for normalcy, and he's sure that someday he'll see the world beyond West Virginia. When he meets Alice, a pretty girl working at a record shop in the small nearby town of Dahlia, he's immediately smitten. For a moment he nearly forgets about the monster he's become. But his brother, Rebel, is all too eager to remind Michael of his place....

"This relentlessly grim tale is most definitely not for the squeamish, but it's nearly impossible to put down." ( Publishers Weekly)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had seen it recommended in a Books of Horror group on Facebook many times and finally decided to give it a try. This is definitely not classic horror though it makes you feel horrific. The only monsters in this book are human. There is a melancholy tone through the whole book and it doesn't stop, even up until the end. So you ask, why read a book like this if all it does is make you feel bad? I answer, because I like to feel all spectrums of emotions and from time to time I enjoy subtle unease and sadness.

I had figured out the plot twist pretty early on and was happy thats how it played out because the twist was amazing. Well written and very detailed. I enjoyed the narrator even though he had a bit of an accent. Give this book a try. You won't regret it.

I am not really quite sure what to say...
This was the most horrifying, yet saddest, book I have ever listened too.
I can’t say I recommend it. Yet, I cannot say I don’t. So, what I will say is, Listen At Your Own Risk.

Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre without Leatherface and chain saws. I live in Ohio, across the river from WV, and could really relate to the mountain area described here. The mountains of WV are so thick and remote that I could actually imagine families like this one, minus the horror stuff, living deep in the woods. If your a sensitive person don't listen to this book, but if you like a good "holy crap is this possible" horror story go for it. I would definitely recommend this one.

Good book

This is the first book I've listened to from Ania Ahlborn. I was really impressed, like others have mentioned this book had a lot of violence and brutality but the character development and details balanced everything out. The narration was great too, Paul Boehmer did a great job, all the voices were spot on!

Very well written and engaging!

You think you got some of the story figured out but then it just keeps getting worse and worse for poor Michael. it's a wonderfully dark story. one of the most disturbing books I've ever encountered. Right up there with The Road and Tender Is The Flesh. Just make sure you don't have a weak stomach.

what a rollercoaster

This novel was dark, gory, gritty, bleak, relentless and fun! A great twist on the Texas Chainsaw style plot with a view from the inside.

Superb horror
