Publisher's summary

From the author of The Cotswolds Werewolf comes a new collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches in the vein of Conan Doyle, revealing for the first time the secrets behind the theft of the hobnailed boots, the mysterious madness of the Right Honourable Wilfred Crabb, the case of the haunted public house, the curious and seemingly supernatural events surrounding a remote hotel on the east coast, and the truth behind the strange disappearance of Cyrus Thicknesse, the man in the sensible necktie. "I must say, Holmes, I am a bit surprised to see you taking an interest in something based on sympathy." "You do not think me sympathetic?" "Of course I do. But you have said yourself that it is the rational challenge and not the human aspect that draws you to your cases. Humans are mere factors in a problem, I think were your words." "Did I really say that? Hm, well, I am an odd sort, am I not?"

Great Story & Narration

I love Sherlock stories and the narration by Nigel Peevers is great. This was nine short stories, but all were enjoyable. Short enough to listen to them over and over when you have a short time to listen to an audio.
Given ARC audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Nine Sherlock Holmes Short Stories

The stories range from just ok to very interesting. The performance was good - especially Watson.

The Sensible Necktie etc

A new smattering of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The stories are good but it is the narration by Nigel Peever that makes this collection stand out.He was excellent! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Strangest Holmes I've ever heard

Normally I don't like to critique an actor's portrayal of a character- they're interpretation is a personal and artistic choice - but in this case, the over the top portrayal of Sherlock Holmes took away from both the story and the rest of the narration. Nigel Peever's Holmes sounded like a cross between Sean Connery and Dracula, overly melodramatic and unnecessarily sinister. It was doubly annoying in that the rest of the characterizations were really quite well done, each distinct and individual, but every time Holmes talked, I cringed.

It didnt help either that the production was occasionally spotty, too quiet with some characters so that I had to turn it up only to be blasted when Holmes recited some drawn-out tritism.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed the stories more if the narration had been more to my liking, but I found them to be below par (and I have read/listened to probably hundreds of Holmes stories.) They felt a bit forced as far as plot, and strained as far as the Holmes/Watson relationship

If you are a fan of grand melodramatic performance, then perhaps this is for you, but I will not be getting the second installment in this series.

Getting Better

This is my second collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Peter K Andersson I've listened to. I will say that he has improved his writing with this collection although he stills needs some work. The narration was well done. I know a few other reviewers said they had a hard time hearing Holmes voice but I had no such problems. However, I will say that I listen to my audiobooks with earbuds on so that might make a difference, not sure. I enjoyed Nigel Peever's narration of the stories. He gives each character their own voice and emotions, really bringing the stories to life. If you enjoy Sherlock Holmes stories then this is a decent collection. I've read/listened to worse and better.

The Voice of Failure

The story itself is very enjoyable. I enjoy many of the new Sherlock Holmes stories that follow the best of the original.

It is the voice used for Sherlock Holmes that kills the performance. That voice mumbles and is so horrible I had real problems understanding his words.

Sherlock Holmes shorts

I love Sherlock Holmes. I liked listening to this narrator. He was able to create voices unique to each character.

A great collection!

This is a collection of nine short stories, and I can say I really enjoyed all of them. Of course there will be some that resonate better than others, depending of what are you looking for in these tales; but all of them are nice examples of a classical well-written mystery.

They fit perfectly with the canon and, respecting Doyle's style, they give us a wonderful reading.

I liked the narration except for Homes' voice, Other than this, a great job!
