Publisher's summary
Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper, so the other houseguests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6:30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank then backfired, with tragic consequences.
For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words "Seven Dials" were to take on a new and chilling significance....

It is Egypt in 2000 BC, where death gives meaning to life. At the foot of a cliff lies the broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a ka-priest. Young, beautiful, and venomous, most agree that it was fate - she deserved to die like a snake! But at her father's house on the banks of the Nile, the priest's daughter Renisenb believes that the woman's death is suspicious. Is it a gesture of goodwill or a sinister trap that lures Rupert St. Vincent and his family to a magnificent estate? What unexpected circumstance stirs old loyalties in Theodora Darrell, an unfaithful wife about to run away with her lover?
In this collection of short stories, the answers are as unexpected as they are satisfying. The Queen of Mystery takes bizarre romantic entanglements, supernatural visitations, and classic murder to inventive new heights.

The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

By day, AJ Raffles is a debonair man-about-town and one of England's finest cricketers. By night - he's London’s most notorious thief! Classic crime to rival Sherlock Holmes. If you walk down London’s Piccadilly, you come across an elegant Georgian building set back from the constant stream of traffic. This is The Albany, an imposing warren of “bachelor” apartments which has been home to a string of celebrities for over two centuries, from Lord Byron to Terence Stamp. But The Albany was also the address for one of the greatest fictional creations of late 19th-century crime writing, AJ Raffles.

The fiction world of today needs a “Saint” more than it ever did. For years now that scene has been dominated by the “anti-heroes"—those grim gray operators in a sunless sub-culture where global issues are worked out with totally unemotional pragmatism, those hapless uninspired puppets manipulated and expended by ruthlessly dedicated little brothers of Big Brother. It made morbidly fascinating narrative, but it never gave anyone a lift until it climaxed in the hyper-gadgeted parodies of 007 extravaganzas.

A blinding snowstorm - and a homicidal maniac - traps a small party of friends in an isolated estate. Out of this deceptively simple setup, Agatha Christie fashioned one of her most ingenious puzzlers, which in turn would provide the basis for The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in history. From this classic title novella to the deliciously clever gems on its tail (solved to perfection by Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple), this rare collection of murder most foul showcases Christie at her inventive best.

Stunning ending
I couldn't believe the ending...never had clue. This was an enjoyable story, and the tie-in to The Secret of Chimneys was an added pleasure.
I had to warm up to the narrator and would hesitate to buy an audiobook with her as the reader again. She has a nasal, high-pitched voice that is jarring to the ear. Diana Bishop (Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver series) has a cultured, smooth voice that would be better suited to classic British country house mysteries.

It's Agatha, but not Hugh
I love Agatha Christie as much as the next person but I really struggled to get through this one. Like many reviewers, I found Emilia Fox's performance to be over the top and extremely hard to listen to. Probably like many of those folks, my library is full of outstanding Hugh Frasier narrations so it's entirely possible this only suffers by comparison. It was so hard to listen to it's hard to even comment on the quality of the story. If you're a new collector of the Christie Cannon from audible by all means try this one out. If you're addicted to Hugh Frasier give this a pass. You won't like it.

A light mystery
Any additional comments?
The story has Christie's usual cleverness, but is much lighter in tone than most of her other novels. Emilia Fox did a competent job narrating, but in a good performance, the voice actor or actress disappears; however, at various points (especially with older male characters), all I could hear was an actress doing a funny voice. Her voice for Superintendent Battle was particularly distracting, which made key scenes less effective. I still enjoyed it overall, though.
