About this listen

Her World-Altering Secret Can’t Be Hidden Much Longer

Elloren Gardner hides the most powerful secret in all Erthia - she is the Black Witch of Prophecy, and destined to triumph…or be used as the ultimate weapon of destruction.

Separated from everyone she loves, isolated and hunted, Elloren must turn to the last person she can trust - her fastmate, Commander Lukas Grey. With the Mage forces of Gardneria poised to conquer all of Erthia, Elloren has no choice but to ally with Lukas and combine their power to keep herself out of the hands of Gardnerian leader Marcus Vogel…the holder of the all-consuming Shadow Wand.

With just weeks to train to become a warrior, and no control over her magic, Elloren finds unexpected allies among those under orders to kill her. It’s time to step up. To fight back. And to forge onward through the most devastating loss yet.

Critics are raving about Laurie Forest’s incredible debut, The Black Witch:

“Forest uses a richly imagined magical world to offer an uncompromising condemnation of prejudice and injustice.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Exquisite character work, an elaborate mythology, and a spectacularly rendered universe make this a noteworthy debut, which argues passionately against fascism and xenophobia.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This briskly paced, tightly plotted novel enacts the transformative power of education, creating engaging characters set in a rich alternative universe with a complicated history that can help us better understand our own.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

You always worry that when you begin a series that is so good, it may disappoint down the line. I just finished book 3 of this series and let me say... this is amazing!

Mage Elloren Gardner realizes at this point she has powers. Now she has to learn how to use what has been hidden from her all these years. What others have spent years trying to grow she has to learn and grow in a short time.

Everyone's biggest fear in all the realms is that the new Black Witch will be like the one before. Evil and wanting to destroy everyone that is not the same race as them. Those who should be helping Elloren, as they are on the same side, are also trying to kill her out of fear of the past. Because of this, Elloren finds she must go back to Lukas and ask for his protection. Considering how they left things prior, she is not sure if he will be willing.

More laughs, loss, and twists are in book 3. It does not disappoint. The narrator once again does a fabulous job voicing all of the characters in this third installment. Book 4 does not come out until December! I have no idea how I am going to last so long waiting to see what happens next.

Obsessed!

Ahh! The only problem I had with this book, is that with all the description, I almost forget what dialog is being said!

On the edge of my seat!

So As Yvan fan I’m disappointed in this book... 😭

Spoilers!!!
Like okay Yvan dies and Elloren just gets right on it with Lukas. Ugh I don’t like Lukas, but what makes it worse is she like barely mourned Yvan! And Yvan basically married him self to her by kissing her in Iron Flower. Sure seems like she really cared about him! Not! 😝 really emotionally struggling to keep on with this book as I’m very disturbed by this.

Bit disappointed this far...

Seriously edge of your seat material. You’re fully thrust into a magical war torn world and I love how much Elloren grows by the end. I was shocked, exhilarated, angry, exasperated, and deeply moved. Such an emotional roller coaster but definitely worth the read.

Simply Thrilling!

I was so excited by this series after the first book but after finishing book 3 I’m kinda bored. I’ve invested a lot of time listening to it and it’s irritating that the plot is plodding along. How much longer can this series be drawn out before it wraps up?

Just an elongated version of Book 1 & 2 of the series

While I enjoyed it. there is way too much sex. Especially for young kids.

Mixed feelings about this one.

I didn’t know the BWC was a YA series when I picked up the black which and instantly fell in love with it. It’s been decades since I was considered a YA ;)
Such beautiful writing and characters, which over the span of the 3 books have grown and learned, loved, hated, feared and faced death, destruction, hopelessness and still come out the other side stronger.
As an avid reader/listener (I love both forms) I’m certainly not a stranger to the genre, which can be a light reading when I want to change pace from more adult, heavy and complex books, but the BWC so far has blown me away and I cannot recommend it enough!
******spoiler alert - no names though******

I’m crying as I write this, heartbroken over the latest death and confused over the sudden revelation that a previously thought dead character is in fact alive.
I’ve felt all the blows dealt by Vogel. His unspeakable evil and the evils of his followers. The mass hysteria that gathers otherwise decent people into a regime that is so corrupt, wrong and evil, just because they are led to, and allow themselves to believe that they are better, purer and morally superior to those they’ve oppressed. As a historian I can easily draw parallels to our history and see some of our most shameful actions in the pages (audio) of these books.
I’m completely in love with all the main characters - protagonists - of the story, and characters like Lukas, who starts out as a complicated mix of good and distant and sometimes cruel, has become one of my absolute favorites and I found myself rooting for him despite everything.

Devastatingly wonderful and emotional
