About this listen

Rev Prof Alexander Balmain Bruce (1831-1899) was a Scottish theologian and minister of the Free Church of Scotland. Published in 1871, The Training of the Twelve is an ambitious biography and classic study of Jesus' selection and training of his apostles. A chapter is dedicated to each of the 12 (Bruce includes sound arguments on the identity of the three unnamed apostles) in which the different traits and circumstances of each apostle is discussed.

He examines the methods by which Jesus selected his followers in this gripping chronological narrative, which also deals with the values of humanity that each of them contributed to Jesus' mission.

Difficult to understand

It was written at a grade level so high it was virtually useless. It seemed every third word required defining. A more careful word selection could make this work invaluable.

the classic book on training

The depth and insight into the beginnings of Christianity as well as the intellect of the writer is remarkable.
