About this listen

An abandoned young girl finds herself at the mercy of a mysterious woman who is not quite what she seems in this atmospheric and unputdownable novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Flowers in the Attic—now a popular Lifetime movie.

Left on a train platform in an unfamiliar village, little Saffron Faith Anders is certain her father will return shortly, just like he promised. She holds out hope even as the hours pass and the station grows dark. When a strange old woman with a large umbrella approaches and inquires about her situation, Saffron doesn’t immediately trust the imposing do-gooder, but with the chances of her father returning growing ever slimmer, she agrees to rest at the old woman’s house.

Her stay was supposed to be for a few minutes, hours at most, but Saffron soon realizes she has been confined to a house of dark secrets and is now at the mercy of the enigmatic Umbrella Lady. One minute grandmotherly and the next wickedly cruel, she shears Saffron’s hair, burns all the clothes she had in her suitcase, and pretends that the photo of a young girl hanging on her bedroom wall is no one in particular. When strange letters arrive from Saffron’s father, claiming that he will send for her shortly, hope returns to her young heart. But Saffron soon discovers that those who claim to love you will often hurt you the most.

The overall story line is fairly good, just seemed that there was too much time spent in the beginning about a few days period of time that became redundant after a while.

Too Slow in the Beginning

There was nothing that I didn’t dislike about the story, or the way the lady had presented it, which is why I purchased the next book even though I didn’t like how VC Andrews ended it.

I like the ladies voice it really put me in vision of the story wanting more.

Looking forward to moving forward in the series. Rinded me of many others by the author, though I know now it is a ghost writer.

Reminded me of others by the author.

I love V.C. Andrew's. I love her books I've read most of them. However this is definitely not her typical story. Typically when I think of V.C. Andrews, I think of a love story gone wrong. You know a brother loving a long lost aunt or a sister he didn't know about, those kind of weird things. This however was something totally different. The only thing that made it VC Andrews story was the very last chapter. But it was still a great book. The narrator reading it did such a great job that I wished she had done most of her other books. Unfortunately some of the women that read these story lines Make these girls sound like 7 year olds instead of teenager's or young women. No matter how innocent no one actually talks like a baby anymore. So it was refreshing that the narrator actually made the young girl sound like a young girl. Maisy Daisy in the story? Wow! What a great job! I think I've met her in real life! Most of us have met someone like this at some point in life haha. What a great job on making her sound like a neurotic crazy woman that she was written to be. I enjoyed this book even though it's not the typical VC Andrews storyline and look forward to some of the newer novels that I haven't read or heard yet.

not what I was expecting...

Epic VC Andrews

I really enjoyed the story, in the beginning it did drag a bit but picked up and kept my interest. The narrator however almost had me giving up. She is extremely automated almost like Siri!! I just finished the Harry Potter series and of course you can’t compare anyone to Jim Dale but she didn’t come close! All her characters sound the same so your confused at times of who’s speaking and her depressive, automatic tone is enough to drive you insane! I’m looking forward to the next book in this series but if she narrates I’m probably skipping it unfortunately.

Great story, lackluster narration

I thought the book was pretty predictable. I had a feeling I knew what the ending was going to be but there was a couple surprises. I did find the book sad and I don't usually read sad books. I can't say too much more about this book was out running all of the story but I do recommend it Narrator was exellent.

a little boring but I couldn't stop reading it.
