About this listen

“The woman who emerges from these pages is as riveting as her books” (The Wall Street Journal) in this Edgar Award–nominated celebration of the famously private V.C. Andrews—featuring family photos, personal letters, a partial manuscript for an unpublished novel, and more.

Best known for her internationally, multi-million-copy bestselling novel Flowers in the Attic, Cleo Virginia Andrews lived a fascinating life. Born to modest means, she came of age in the American South during the Great Depression and faced a series of increasingly challenging health issues. Yet, once she rose to international literary fame, she prided herself on her intense privacy.

Now, The Woman Beyond the Attic aims to connect her personal life with the public novels for which she was famous. Based on Virginia’s own letters, and interviews with her dearest family members, her long-term ghostwriter Andrew Neiderman tells Virginia’s full story for the first time.

Perfect for anyone hoping to learn more about the enigmatic woman behind one of the most important novels of the 20th century, The Woman Beyond the Attic will have you “transfixed” (Publishers Weekly) from the first page.

VC ANDREWS FAN

I love VC Andrews I always have. I was hoping that this book had information about her life that wasn't already public knowledge. If you are A fan you will already know most if not all of the details in this book. It does contain parts of her work that was never finished and for that alone I enjoyed it.

Boy did I learn a lot.

I most loved learning about the fabulous author that I went through my teen years with and never did she fail me. I had an extremely difficult childhood and with every V. C. Andrews book I was able to escape my life. Even feeling hope with each ending I would find my way out. I have to also say that listening to her own story it has inspired me to delve into writing one of my own.

A stunningly beautiful and talented woman

It was nice to finally get to know you Virgina. You led a glorious life in writing to elevate your real life to a better place. What a diamond you were.

Not bad. But lacking.

It was alright. Still so many unanswered questions. I did not really find the insight I had hoped for.

Fascinating!

What a life she led! I can see how many of her stories came from her life and her perception of life. What in the world was going on in her head!!! Her books are all similar but so different at the same time. Can't stop reading them and cannot stop watching the movies. There needs to be a movie about her life.
