About this listen

This novella is a Victorian romance with a steampunk twist. It is a standalone book that compliments the Artifact Hunters series.

Amy Hamilton is a good girl. She always did exactly as society demanded, kept her eyes downcast, never spoke out of turn, and hid the myriad of questions swirling in her brain. In return for shutting off her intellect, she landed an abusive fiancé and was cast aside by the ton. Disgraced, she seeks refuge at the Lyons' country estate. There she is given a bracelet made from a unicorn's tail and told it contains enough magic to grant one wish. She knows what she wants - someone to love the true her and not the shallow image that smiles back from the mirror. She never expected the unicorn to send her two men....

Lachlan Hawke - dashing airship pirate and notorious rogue.

Jackson Jackson - the scarred henchman and enforcer for the Lyons Empire.

The two men have a bet: Who will be first to win a kiss from the delicate rose? The loser to be tarred and feathered. Loki is sure of a quick victory and that Jackson will be impersonating a chicken by the end of the week. Jackson doesn't even know why he agreed to the stupid bet; the girl shudders whenever he enters a room. But the men are about to learn you should be careful making bets when a unicorn is involved....

GREAT NOVELLA!

I have listened to the entire 'Artifact Hunters' series and I honesty have to say it is the best series EVER! This novella focuses on the story of Cara's best friend Amy. Once again I was enthralled- mostly because of Gemma Dawson's captivating narration. The combo of A.W. Exley and Gemma Dawson is a match made in heaven.

Good addition

Good addition to the other artifact books. Can’t wait to see if there is a new one.

Are there Unicorns?

I have enjoyed these books but the first one was the best so far. There is quite a bit of tongue in cheek humor. There are some sex scenes which can be graphic, in a goofy way. This series has definitely been different! The reader is fantastic!

A Juxtaposed Fairytale

A short and sweet romance story. The voice given to our hero takes some getting used to.

Not my cup of tea

I listened to this book ages ago when I first purchased it, and gave it two stars. I am currently re-listening to all of the books in my library, and this one was next on my list. I honestly can't remember if I actually finished listening the first time through.... but I'm not going to finish it this time. I just don't like the characters or the storyline and I'm getting frustrated with it instead of enjoying my listening time, so I'm going to say my two-star review is accurate and I'm moving on. It's nicely written but the misogyny of arrogant men making bets on who can best manipulate a woman was not cool, and I did not like the crude commentary along the way.

Lecherous and sweet?!

“He changed his opinion of the lad and the size of his balls; he displayed the sheer ignorance of a blind rhino that also happened to be a eunuch.”
What the what? Yeah, I scratched my head listening to this. This has an anime steampunk vibe both juvenile and adult. The series follows Caro’s romance/adventure with crime boss Nathaniel Lyons.
This standalone gives Caro’s friend Amy (from book 1) a HEA. But, perhaps because of the shorter length, the crass and the cute tended to clash instead of coming together.

“I don’t want to peel a naked granny off my face.”
The toxic trope of two men making advances on a gal over a bet sets the stage, followed by a lot of leering, lusting, and trash talking. There’s a few F bombs, a lot of crass, and a fairly predictable romance in which the unicorn thing doesn’t signify at all. If you’re looking for magic, this isn’t where you’ll find it.

“His sack felt like he had cannon balls in his trousers”
Although she was old enough to have an ex-fiancé and has medical skills, it felt like the two swashbuckling beaus were grizzled, lecherous men while Amy was an innocent little mouse.

“No man could watch that and think of something other than his finger being sucked.”
There’s one finger-y scene and one full-on scene which are also weirdly skeezy considering the ultimately sweet story of love between two very different people. Which isn’t to say I hated this novella.
I just needed to have the proper tongue in cheek (and apparently fingers and balls) frame of mind.
