About this listen

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.

Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.

Witch Holly Winters is ready for a peaceful, magical Christmas in her family’s cozy mountain cabin in Nocturne Falls. She plans to do some knitting and watch all the best holiday movies. But when ancient dark magic begins to stir in the snowy forest, peace and serenity quickly disappear. With danger lurking at every turn, Holly teams up with Demetrius Voss, a brooding and irresistibly handsome vampire neighbor, to unravel the mystery menacing their beloved supernatural town.

As they work together to contain the rising threat, Holly finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Demetrius’s quiet strength and unexpected charm. Between Christmas lights, snowball fights, and quiet moments by the fire, sparks begin to fly—proving that even in the midst of chaos, the holiday spirit has a way of bringing people together.

With two quirky cats, a dash of romance, and an epic battle against ancient forces, Holly and Demetrius must rely on each other to protect the town they love. Will they restore the magic in time for Christmas—and discover that the greatest gift of all is the one they never saw coming?

The Witch’s Christmas Catastrophe

The Witch’s Christmas Catastrophe by Kristen Painter
A Nocturne Falls series novella. Paranormal holiday romance novella.
Nocturne Falls is a magical town that celebrates Halloween every day allowing the vampires, shifters, gargoyles, fae and others to walk openly among the tourists that visit.
Vampire Demetrius Voss gets stuck in a massive snowstorm on the way up the mountain above Nocturne Falls. He’s able to make it to Holly Winters small cozy cabin where they talk among her Christmas lights and get to know each other. The next morning they trudge through the snow to town. They find an ancient dark magic stirring in the forest and since Holly is from the family that originally set the protection spells, she knows she has to help fix it and prevent the evil from entering the town. Demetrius helps protect Holly and the town.

The story felt like it had at least three places it could have easily ended. And then another chapter started of wrap up. The added content was cementing their relationship, feelings, and safety of Nocturne Falls.
Short, sweet, defeat the evil, and hea. Magical romance.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by B J Harrison who performs the full series. There are distinct voices for the two main characters and a few secondary. The narrations is engaging and emotional and a great way to catch up with the series.
I increased the playback to 1.5 for closer to reading and conversational comfort.

Loved the characters

I loved this book. Kristen Painter is one of my favorites. It's short and sweet but still great. You can read or listen without having read any of the rest of the series. It would be a lot better if you read some of the other books as that really gets you into the feel of the town. I loved the characters and especially liked Holly and Demetrius. I hope we see more of them in the future. I'm so happy we saw a small scene with Bridget.

Rushed

I know it's a shorter book, but a lot of the story beats feel unearned. The villian has no motive and there is hardly any chemistry between the two lead characters. It's a fine story, but she's written much better, more compelling books.

Magical Holiday Chaos: A Must-Read!

Kristen Painter delivers holiday magic with a twist in The Witch's Christmas Catastrophe, a charming addition to the beloved Nocturne Falls Universe. From the first snowfall to the final showdown, the story is a delightful blend of holiday cheer, magical mayhem, and a touch of romance that fans of the series will thoroughly enjoy.

Holly Winters is a relatable and endearing protagonist. Her plans for a cozy, low-key Christmas are turned upside down when dark magic disrupts the peace, but her resilience and quick wit make her a character worth rooting for. The addition of Demetrius Voss, the brooding vampire neighbor, adds an irresistible mix of tension and chemistry. Their slow-burn connection feels authentic, building naturally as they face the escalating danger together.

Painter’s depiction of Nocturne Falls, where Halloween reigns all year, is as enchanting as ever. The snowy, holiday-infused backdrop provides a fresh layer of charm, balancing the light-hearted moments with the darker, suspenseful plot. The two quirky cats, each with their own personality, add humor and heart to the story, making them standout characters in their own right.

B.J. Harrison's narration is, as always, a highlight. His ability to bring each character to life with unique voices and convey the perfect mix of suspense, humor, and romance enhances the listening experience. His portrayal of Demetrius is especially noteworthy, capturing both the character’s gravitas and vulnerability.

The only reason this book doesn’t earn a full 5 stars is that some of the conflict’s resolution felt a tad rushed, leaving a desire for a bit more exploration of the story’s deeper magical elements. However, this minor critique doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment.

For fans of the Nocturne Falls Universe or anyone seeking a cozy, paranormal holiday adventure, The Witch's Christmas Catastrophe is a must-read. It’s the perfect mix of festive fun, supernatural intrigue, and heartwarming romance, wrapped up in Painter’s signature wit and creativity.

No, This Is Not Good

Look, I love the NF series and other titles from this author, but if you've gotten this far with Nocturne Falls, you know there are occasionally books that aren't as great as the others. This one is actually bad. There is no logic, like Big and Bad things are happening, let's not bother to tell anyone. There is no reasoning, like hey this person you've never met says things and you just believe them. There is no personality for the male main character, he is literally just a broody vampire that broods. Even the female main character will just say to him "You're a broody vampire standing there brooding". That's it, that's his character. She doesn't get much more attention in the character growth department, either. After two days or so they are just in each other's lives now and it is wholly unearned because they've done nothing but do some spell casting and broodily stare out of the window. We aren't allowed to know what each likes about the other, what their own attractions are, or how their thoughts and feelings might have progressed over their few days together. There's also no indication that they have even thought to call the Ellinghams, Alice Bishop, or Hank Merrow to let them all know what happened, why, how it was contained, and what this might mean for the future. I was really looking forward to this novella, but, I can't believe I'm saying this - I'm returning this title, and I hope the author's next new series is not phoned in like this title was.

As Thrilling as it is Heartwarming!!!

Kristen Painter’s The Witch's Christmas Catastrophe is a great holiday story filled with magic, danger and of course romance. This is another great story in the world of Nocturne Falls, the story brings together two unlikely neighbors—Holly, a witch craving a peaceful quiet Christmas with her knitting, fireplace and her cat, and Demetrius, a 'broody' vampire seeking solitude in his family’s mountain home.
When a snowstorm forces Demetrius to Holly’s cabin, their quiet holidays take a dramatic turn. Together, they must face dark energies threatening the town, blending magic, courage, and budding romance to save the season and the town. I love these new characters, Demetrius with his calm, quiet, strong demeanor and Holly being a little quirky but powerful witch with powers so strong she didn't even realize. They are a wonderful addition to the Nocturne Falls set!
