Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

When is a story more than just a story? When does it become a myth? When it holds a piece of truth about our history, our morality, and the cosmos. Throughout history, humankind has used stories to explain the unknown. From the cycle of the moon to the changing of the seasons, tales about supernatural beings and events have served to account for the purpose of the cosmos. But mythology isn’t entirely fiction. These stories have been passed down for generations for a reason.

Story
At the beginning of his career, Joseph Campbell developed a lasting fascination with the cultures of the Far East, and explorations of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy later became recurring motifs in his vast body of work. However, Campbell had to wait until middle age to visit the lands that inspired him so deeply. In 1954, he took a sabbatical from his teaching position and embarked on a year-long voyage through India, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and finally Japan.

Still, there are some key texts, tales, and characters we can focus on which will give us a pretty good sense of Japanese mythology. In this audiobook, you'll discover stories of mystery, horror, and romance while simultaneously learning about the Japanese culture.

Beginning in the 18th century with the building of St. Petersburg - a 'window on the West' - and culminating with the challenges posed to Russian identity by the Soviet regime, Figes examines how writers, artists, and musicians grappled with the idea of Russia itself - its character, spiritual essence and destiny. He skillfully interweaves the great works - by Dostoevsky, Stravinsky, and Chagall - with folk embroidery, peasant songs, religious icons and all the customs of daily life, from food and drink to bathing habits to beliefs about the spirit world.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

This was from a time when the Norse had already been converted to Christianity.

Best-selling author Deborah E. Harkness explores the streets, shops, back alleys, and gardens of Elizabethan London, where a boisterous and diverse group of men and women shared a keen interest in the study of nature. These assorted merchants, gardeners, barber-surgeons, midwives, instrument makers, mathematics teachers, engineers, alchemists, and other experimenters, she contends, formed a patchwork scientific community whose practices set the stage for the Scientific Revolution.

Author's need for complete disclosure!
Author's footnotes on what drew her to this trilogy and the piciune nature of the work she does in her "day" job! I enjoyed her story of how she picked her chacters, how the story took on a life of its own and her struggles to contain it. I wrote a partial book and couldn't believe how it would take off on its own. It also had to be really satisfying to use all her past knowledge in different type of writing. I appreciate how the author shows how she made the stories and for a would be future author that is sweet! Her work has become a great favorite read and I am currently starting my second read of her current book. Thank you, Ms Harkness, for your books. And thanks again for a glimpse inside your writer's mind on how you do it.

It was like getting a Directors Cut version of the trilogy…
For die hard fans of the All Souls Trilogy; what a treat to rummage through the incredible mind of my favorite author. The World has given me even more to love about ADOW and my favorite fictional characters, Diana Bishop and Matthew Claremont. I absolutely adore the writer’s methodology of using the lifespan of a vampire to explain actual historical figures that remain shadowed in mystery.

The Best
This last book is the perfect way to end a true Trilogy series. It brings each character to full life for me. I love the series and love the way Ms. Deborah Harness finishes up the series and wraps it up so neatly for all listeners to get involved!

disappointed
great narrator as alwas. No real story, was disappointed with it. A lot of time spent on giving detailed information about the characters boring info at least to me. Was expecting another great story like the other books, a continuance/following of time where I was taken into the story and saw the twins grown etc. very disappointed.
