About this listen

In The Chase, Clive Cussler introduced an electrifying new hero: the tall, lean, no-nonsense detective Isaac Bell, who, driven by his sense of justice, travels early-20th-century America pursuing thieves and killers - and sometimes criminals much worse.

It is 1907, a year of financial panic and labor unrest. Train wrecks, fires, and explosions sabotage the Southern Pacific Railroad's Cascades express line and, desperate, the railroad hires the fabled Van Dorn Detective Agency. Van Dorn sends in his best man, and Bell quickly discovers that a mysterious saboteur haunts the hobo jungles of the West, a man known as the Wrecker, who recruits accomplices from the down-and-out to attack the railroad, and then kills them afterward. The Wrecker traverses the vast spaces of the American West as if he had wings, striking wherever he pleases, causing untold damage and loss of human life. Who is he? What does he want? Is he a striker? An anarchist? A revolutionary determined to displace the "privileged few"? A criminal mastermind engineering some as yet unexplained scheme?

Whoever he is, whatever his motives, the Wrecker knows how to create maximum havoc, and Bell senses that he is far from done - that, in fact, the Wrecker is building up to a grand act unlike anything he has committed before. If Bell doesn't stop him in time, more than a railroad could be at risk - it could be the future of the entire country.

Filled with intricate plotting and dazzling set pieces, The Wrecker is one of the most entertaining thrillers in years.

Very good story!

I enjoyed the book very much and realized that I will finish Isac Bell series!!
Only problem with the recording was that Chapters were not marked correctly. i.e. The chapters in the audible were not in sync with books chapters. There were many chapters within one and this annoyed me the whole time listening the book..

Interesting, historic listen

I would have given this 4 1/2 stars. It's really an excellent book, but I am trying to reserve 5 star reviews for the truly exceptional books and narrations.

We enjoyed the story. The characters were engaging, the tale flowed along nicely, and the historic vehicles were the frosting on the cake. We are looking forward to hearing the next book in the series.

My husband and I listen to the books together via our Kindle Fire connect to the "Firestation" docking station. It is a pleasant way to share to enjoy the stories together. Televison is so disappointing most of the time, but with these books to listen to we don't bemoan the decreasing number of good tv shows. We love Audible!

Action, drama, suspense!

Van Dorn detectives never give up, especially Isaac Bell! this second novel in the Isaac Bell series pits the famed detective against a mysterious schemer known as the wrecker who will stop at nothing to stop the Southern Pacific Railroad from completing a critical cut off.

Cliff hanger

I loved the history and practically held my breath through the whole thing. I can hardly wait to see a movie made out of it - it seems made for a fast paced action movie.

Suspense

The reader knows who the Wrecker is. Scott Brick narrates the story so well that one wants to shout out that the senator is the Wrecker and to beware!!!

Love the historical context too.
