Publisher's summary

From the author of For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts, a celebration of the women at the heart of Latine families

Born into a large, close-knit family in Nicaragua, Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez grew up surrounded by strong, kind, funny, sensitive, resilient, judgmental, messy, beautiful women. Whether blood relatives or chosen family, these tías and primas fundamentally shaped her view of the world—and so did the labels that were used to talk about them. The tía loca who is shunned for defying gender roles. The pretty prima put on a pedestal for her European features. The matriarch who is the core of her community but hides all her pain.

In Tías and Primas, the follow-up to her acclaimed debut For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts, Mojica Rodríguez explores these archetypes. Fearlessly grappling with the effects of intergenerational trauma, centuries of colonization, and sexism, she attempts to heal the pain that is so often embodied in female family lines.

Tías and Primas is a deeply felt love letter to family, community, and Latinas everywhere.

A Mirror for All Latines

The way Prisca marries theory with praxis and reality provides a mirror for all Latines to reflect on the social, political, economic, and familial institutions which shape us. I felt seen, called out, and validated. A necessary piece of scholarship.

So necesario! Must Read!

This book was so good! Everyone has at least one of these tias or primas. Brought back so many memories of my own tias and thinking “I know exactly which of my Tias she is describing” lol.

Good Listen

This was a good listen. To hear how we have a bit of these tías and primas within ourselves was mind blowing.

Amazing

I felt myself in each Tia and prima she described. We are them for others. I saw my own Tias and Primas in a new perspective. This was my first audio book I listened to in its entirety in just a few days!

Awareness and Understanding 🙏

Prisca,
Gracias, for writing this book! It’s helped me better understand the beautiful family dynamics within our families. I now see even more clearly how each incredible person, each Tía and prima (and abuela), has played a special part in shaping who I am.
I feel truly seen and grateful for that.

Las Primas that will become those tias

so much familiarity to the dynamic of any Hispanic/latino family. The differences the unity the woman we are. Family will always be the biggest critics but your most loyal supporters

Every latine person needs to read this!

Validating, eye opening, emotional, and over mall inspiring. I am going to return to this just like her first book when I need validation for navigating higher academia.

Not what I expected

This book was more like a dictionary rather than a novel. Defining what each woman represents in the Hispanic cultura.
