True toughness involves far more than what most of us believe and has far greater influence on our success and fulfillment than we imagine. Toughness is defined by four interdependent elements: Character - who are you and are you secure in your identity? Capability - what are you able to do? Capacity - what are you able to withstand? And commitment - what are you willing to do?
Being truly tough is a genuine command over ourselves and an ever-increasing mastery of the mental, emotional, and physical elements that define us and determine the course of our lives. It gives us the fortitude, mindset, and tools to not simply survive adversity, but to thrive through it and in its wake. It gives us a broad and always expanding array of capabilities that create self-reliance and confidence, give us access to new opportunities and experiences, and allows us to contribute more than we consume. It ensures we understand who we truly are, and that we ultimately determine that identity and reinforce it daily with our choices and habits. And true toughness allows us to remain committed to our chosen path to achieve what we intend no matter what it is or how difficult the process.
This is not a chest-pounding call for "manly" activity, emotional sterility, and self-flagellation, but a guide to discover and develop our ultimate capacity to withstand adversity, to collect and build the mental and physical tools to accomplish the challenging and incredible, to find security in our identities and the confidence and resilience it engenders, and to become an active and positive contributor to the world at large.

Everything I needed.
I started this book thinking it would be all about weightlifting and the mindset around weightlifting. Sure, there’s a lot of that in there but this book ended up being so much more than than. It was everything I didn’t know I needed at this time in my life. Highly recommend.

All pronouns welcome. Essential reading for a modern generation
If you’re triggered by the title, go read the book and revisit this review. Seriously, Greg does an amazing job of exploring the vast space of toughness. Breaking down toxic stereotypes while navigating the reasons they arise and outlining potent lessons that can be learned.
I’m tired of saying, “I’m tired of living through major historical events”, and I bet you are too. This book has helped me build an actual plan forward. If your lost, read this. If your bored, read this. If your queer, read this. If your into yee yee nation, read this. Anyone can benefit from this book

Wow. Just Wow.
There isn't one thing about this book I didn't like. I took 9 pages of hand-written notes on the first chapter alone. Decided to buy the hard copy so I can highlight all the knowledge I want to revisit.
Typically I dislike "self help" books but this one is so well done and Greg narrates it so well, I can't say enough good things about it.
Read this book. Whether you want to be tough or just want to be educated. Read this book.

Best Self-Help Book in a Long Time
No need for hundreds of hours listening to books on meditation, sleep, exercise, morning journals, habits, & self-compassion. This one covers everything without any fillers or fluff. Excellent narration by the author. Practical how-to’s. Don’t let the cover deceive you - it’s about being the best version of yourself no matter your starting point. Valuable resource, cuts through the BS surrounding toughness
As a firefighter-paramedic, I’ve thought about a recommended reading list for firefighters, and this book would 100% be on it. Its perspective is valuable for anyone, but especially so in a profession where the need for physical toughness is a given, but the mental and emotional elements that comprise truly being tough aren’t always identified or taught. Greg Everett gives these elements their due and presents practical steps readers can take to assess their own values and abilities, then to take action based on where they want to be.

Eye opener
This book and stills great insight to all aspects of your life. It gives you the strength and awareness certain situations and allows you to think outside of the box. This book has really lightened me and has molded me in ways that wouldn’t have been at the forefront of my mind otherwise. It’s amazing book for anyone trying to better where they’re at today and create better habits and dreams. Dreams.
