About this listen

No person today is untouched by what happens in the rest of the world. With this historic development, the Dalai Lama understands that the essential task of humanity is to cultivate peaceful coexistence. But this has long been problematic with religion, and while previous conflicts over religious differences may have been significant, they did not threaten the very survival of humanity. Now, when extremists have access to powerful technologies, a single spark could ignite a powder keg of frightening proportions.

Yet the Dalai Lama shows how the challenges of globalization can also move us in another direction, to a deeper plane where nations, cultures, and individuals connect through their shared human nature. All major religions confront the same perennial questions; each has distinct forms of expression. But this marvelous diversity of insight has the potential for inspiring dialogue that can enrich everyone’s pursuit of wisdom.

Toward a True Kinship of Faiths explores where differences between religions can be genuinely appreciated without serving as sources of conflict, as well as offers a hopeful yet realistic look at how humanity must step into the future.

I wish everyone could read this book. His Holiness is so inclusive and deeply compassionate that his message reaches to all of us -- people with different religious beliefs or no beliefs. Each of us has a role to play in reducing conflict, caring for our world and helping our fellow suffering beings.

The best book ever written

In less than two weeks I have listened to "Toward a True Kinship of Faiths" three times and have learned something new each time. This is without question the best talk on comparative theology I have ever heard anywhere. My life has been dramatically improved by the well researched and skillfully explained concepts this book contains.

This book contains an overview of the worlds major religions by a man who is not only a master of his own tradition, but has sincerely embraced the essence of many other traditions. Often speaking form personal experience, the Dalai Lama makes interesting and inspiring comparisons between the worlds religions (including atheism) and also speaks to their differences.

He also discusses obstacles to inter-religious understanding including the particular problem of exclusivity and fundamentalism.

Mr. Gere's narration was exceptional.

Very good

another excellent book from HH the Dalai Lama/ a much needed discussion on world religions and the need for them to join together rather than be at odds with each other/

however, where was the director to assist Richard Gere--he mangles too many Indian names and places/ his reading is--- alright but not inspiring/ and he doesn't mutilate too often nor too badly/

thus it is not too painful to listen and i do enjoy it and am learning/

someone help Richard Gere's pronunciation/

Would you listen to Toward a True Kinship of Faiths again? Why?

I am currently on my second read of this important book; there is a lot of material contained in this book and there are a lot of exotic names concepts and places mentioned and it is too hard to remember them all in one reading.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed hearing the life story of the Dalai Lama, as well as his diagnosis of the world's religious problems and I feel as though he offers a very rational, compassionate, and workable set of solutions towards solving the world's problems using existing religious institutions in a unified approach which could actually work.

Have you listened to any of Richard Gere’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I must admit that hearing the Dalai Lama's life story narrated in first person by Richard Gere threw me for a loop after the first few sentences, but once I adjusted to hearing Richard's voice while picturing the Dalai Lama working with a translator, I was able to easily transcend the initial mind warp. Richard Gere has a very good reading voice and he is very easy to comprehend, so he does an excellent job.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

World Peace - not just a corny wish at a Beauty Pageant

Any additional comments?

This book has inspired me to do my part toward building world peace.

Really gives World Peace a Chance!

This is undoubtedly one of the best if not the best book I have read on the subject.
I ordered the book, so I can easily refer to the different religions.
The narrator is excellent.
If you are interested in the subject, do not hesitate.
My thanks again to Audible to make this book available, JK.
