About this listen

Colonel Utah Blaine, held captive by the Army of the Revolution, broke out of jail and headed north from Mexico with nothing but the clothes on his back. Then he found new trouble struggling at the end of a noose - and stepped in just in time to save the life of a Texas rancher. The would-be executioners were the rancher’s own men, looking to steal his land.

Now Utah has a unique proposition: Have the wealthy Texan play dead, introduce himself as the spread’s new foreman, and take care of the outlaws one by one. The wage to fight another man’s war? A hundred a month plus expenses. The cost of falling in love while he earns that wage? It wasn’t exactly part of the original agreement, but Utah will soon find out–unless the bad guys get to him first.

From start to finish, I was hooked. The characterization of Utah Blaine is that of a good man, ready to do what he knows is right, in the face of all odds. He's what a man should be, and I admires him throughout the story. All the characters felt right. L'amour shows without having to tell. The narrator keeps the atmosphere and pace of the story just right.

Good story, good writing, good performance

Where does Utah Blaine rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Utah Blaine is the first unabridged book I have read with Audible. I am positively impressed with L'Amour's ability to bring his readers out west, right down to the final howl at the moon! Was it the land, the woman, or the wildlife that makes Utah the man he is.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Utah Blaine?

The scene where he returns to his father's wagon and he draws blood as a young boy. The scene and the noises brought me to his side, ready to help him where I could.

What about Craig Klein’s performance did you like?

His ability to disguise his voice and represent the voices of the members of the action.

If you could take any character from Utah Blaine out to dinner, who would it be and why?

That huge man Utah ran into in the saloon and ultimately beat the crap out of him. Great picture as always with Louis L'Amour at the typewriter.

Any additional comments?

I'll be reading the book Semper Fi by WEB Griffin and remember my tour of duty.

HE'S ALL ABOUT DOIN' IT WITHOUT VIOLENCE!
