Publisher's summary

The story was that Eli Patterson had died in a gunfight, but Mike Shevlin knew it couldn't be true: The man who'd been like a father to him had been a Quaker. But when Shevlin rides back to Rafter Crossing to uncover the truth, he finds that the quiet ranching community has become a booming mining town. Newfound wealth has not made Rafter a peaceful place, however, and the smell of fear and greed is thick in the air. As Mike Shevlin tries to unravel the mystery of Patterson's death, he is led deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that controls not only the fate of Rafter Crossing but the heart of a beautiful but tormented young woman - and Shevlin's own destiny.

Characters and production not up to snuff!

This book by Louis L'Amour, was not up to the standards I've come to appreciate on Mr. LAmours writing and the superb production of the readers. However, Mr Culps voice was the wrong voice for these characters. It was hard to imagine that Either of the female voices belonged to a young and beautiful woman, they sounded like old women and not particularly attractive either. The main character Mike shelvin also sounded old and unlikely to be the heroic figure.

Probably Louis L'amour's best story.

Most of L'amour's stories don't have good endings, this one is an exception and exceptional.

LL my favorite, however......

A bit long winded. Had to rewind quite a few times to grasp context. Otherwise, another great book!
