About this listen

Clay Bell spent the last six years fighting Indians, rustlers, and the wilderness itself to make the B-Bar ranch the prize of the Deep Creek Range. But Jud Devitt, a ruthless speculator from the East, now threatens everything Clay has worked for. Devitt, holding a contract with the Mexican Central to deliver railroad ties, wants to harvest timber off the land where Clay grazes his cattle. Backing Devitt are shady politicians, a dishonest banker, and fifty of the toughest lumberjacks in the county. But as Colleen Riley, Devitt’s fiancée, realizes the brutal game he’s playing, her disapproval of his actions, and Clay Bell’s obvious integrity and charm, pull her toward a destiny that will tip the scales in their bloody battle over timber and cattle.

This was definitely one of the smoother reads of L’Amour. Clay Bell is the rancher with a herd of cattle who has staked out a claim to some good timberland. Jud Devitt is the railroad tycoon that has been informed about some valuable timber on Bells land. Washington, lawyers, government agents, fist fights and guns make for a battle of cattlemen versus loggers. The book was really good, but did have a slight anti-climatic ended.

women narrator's part would have sounded better with a woman. Still a great story

Even written back in 54, this story still resonates with everything a good, strong man should be, as do all of L'Amour's stories. We need more true men's adventure fiction like this today.

L'Amour has always been peak men's adventure fiction

Typical of his story lines, a hard working ranch, a timber villein and a few surprises, in a wide open country. You can walk in , sit down and see the story unfold. You will enjoy the Timber and Cowboy spin.

This was a typical L'Amour western, but definitely a good one! I prefer different voice actors, but the reader did a great job of differentiating each character.

Enjoyable, typical L'Amour

very good. Louis stories are all good, some excellent, but a bad presentation destroys the best book.

The presentation is 90% of the review, and J C is
