Publisher's summary
This book is the first of its kind to identify the existential crisis faced by vegans.
Vystopia is the normal response any feeling human being should have after discovering the nature and extent of society’s systematized animal abuse. It’s fueled by the trancelike collusion of non-vegans with a dystopian world they’ve not yet realized they’re part of.
Best-selling author Clare Mann, a vegan psychologist, communications trainer, and existential psychotherapist, not only validates the vegan’s experience but rejects medical labels that claim such anguish is abnormal. As a telling witness to vystopia - a term she coined in 2017 - she provides vegans with a language and toolbox to work through their anguish and unite with others to examine the biggest social justice challenge of our time: our relationship with the animal kingdom.

Every time we eat, we have the power to radically transform the world we live in. Our choices can help alleviate the most pressing issues we face today: the climate crisis, infectious and chronic diseases, human exploitation and, of course, non-human exploitation. Undeniably, these issues can be uncomfortable to learn about but the benefits of doing so cannot be overstated. It is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But in this revolutionary audiobook, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet.

Freedom from unnecessary suffering is the goal of both Buddhism and modern psychotherapy, yet each approaches this intention from a very different perspective. "Buddhist practice helps us awaken to a well-being that is independent of our circumstances," explains Bruce Tift, "while Western psychotherapy helps us bring our disowned experience into awareness in order to live in a more skillful and satisfying way."

In The Upside of Your Dark Side, two pioneering researchers in the field of psychology show that while mindfulness, kindness, and positivity can take us far, they cannot take us all the way. Sometimes, they can even hold us back. Emotions like anger, anxiety, or doubt might be uncomfortable, but it turns out that they are also incredibly useful.

Validating
This book made me feel validated. The burden of knowing the horrors of animal agriculture really does take its mental toll, especially when it can feel like most people just don't care. Everyone has their mental defenses to avoid feeling bad about their choices and the vegan's job is to chip away at those defenses in hopes to get someone to make more compassionate choices. I would recommend this book to any activists who are feeling depressed, anxious, burned out, or feel like what they're doing is not enough.

Pulled me out of the darkness of Awakening
As a New 4 month old Vegan, I was tremendously distraught to the point of depression upon starting Activism work and having my "Vegan Awakening". This book was referred to me in a Facebook group I found called Vystopia. I felt understood and no longer alone on this journey. I feel empowered and hopeful that, not only will my young children see the rise of a Vegan World, but my husband and I will too. I love that the Author narrated it and I found her to be extremely comforting to listen to.. so grateful for her form of Activism by helping the human animals that are fighting for all the beautiful animals of the world. Thank you Claire, I will never stop fighting until all of Mother Earth's sentient beings are free.

WONDERFUL!! TOUCHING AND BRING HOPE!
I highly recommend this book for any vegan that suffer daily having to know what they know the horror that is happening every fraction of second with innocent animals that were forced to live to die and been tortured with a set up date! Clare is wonderful she give tools that help us to still strong and transform our anguish in power change and hope for the animals! I also recommend this for no vegans that is in a relationship with a vegan and struggling to understand exactly how a vegan feels and sometimes why act with so much anger and frustration. Thank you so much Clare ❤️🙏🏻🐄🐾

Enlightening!
I love this book. It brilliantly explains the ordeal most vegans, like me, go through. Now I know the anguish is normal and what to do not to give up to desperation. It is full of facts based on careful research. The book ends on a positive note by encouraging the reader not to lose hope.

This book will open any mind!
A revolutionary book that vegans and non-vegans alike can greatly benefit from reading (or listening). The psychology of why we receive certain information, while tuning out other information is eye opening. Mann provides solid evidence and anecdotes to put things into perspective. I guarantee the book will change ANY heart and mind (including yours).

Terrible, Hard to Listen to
This book, which seems to be made for vegans, reads more for someone who is not vegan. Waste of money.
