About this listen

An Introduction to Carnism

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows offers an absorbing look at what social psychologist Melanie Joy calls carnism, the belief system that conditions us to eat certain animals when we would never dream of eating others. Carnism causes extensive animal suffering and global injustice, and it drives us to act against our own interests and the interests of others without fully realizing what we are doing. Becoming aware of what carnism is and how it functions is vital to personal empowerment and social transformation, as it enables us to make our food choices more freely - because without awareness, there is no free choice.

Wonderful introduction to Carnism

Dr. Melanie Joy introduces and enumerates one of the insidious matrices within which we find ourselves, one rooted in violence, apathy, and oppression. A wonderful introduction to this important topic, with myriad profound realizations about the world as we believe it. A great read for all to understand and break out of the system,

Facts, Insight, and Presentation

Loaded with facts, very well organized and presented. I learned a lot, particularly with regard to the psychology of society as a whole and each of us individually.

For the most part good….

Overall, I enjoyed the book. She has a lot of convincing facts like how the animals feel before and during their slaughtering. Where she lost me? She’s an obvious feminist. I didn’t purchase the book to hear her feminist views. She lost me around the last few chapters when she began making veganism almost a spiritual matter. It was a good book, glad I read it but wouldn’t be able to sit through it again.

Great book.

Not sure why I read some bad comments because it was insightful and very honest. I recommend to people who are curious about becoming Vegan or current Vegans to keep them motivated and thoughtful. Great book to recommend to younger people as well. Easy listening.

Thought provoking

I thought the structure of the book was great. I found the examples used powerful and the statistics alarming.

Incredibly well thought-out

Melanie draws interesting ties between social norms, human psychology and moral responsability. Defenitely an informative book for vegans and carnists alike and a useful tool for advocacy and empathy. 10/10 recommend

Great!

This book is illuminating and important. The animals described in the book will stay with me always, even as I was brought to tears by their stories. Sadly, most of humanity has a long way to go to restore their morality. Stand with the 11 billion animals killed each year and read this book!

I found the book interesting, insightful with new ideas and practical advice. I'll be reading her book beyond beliefs next as it sounds quite good.

A challenging and thought provoking book (even for vegans )

I had to stop a few times while reading this book. The information Dr Joy provided is super valuable yet hard to read.
This book leaves you with a sense of responsibility to share about the horrendous violence carried out by the meat and dairy industry.

The book got philosophical at times which for me was hard to follow, but I appreciate learning about the oppression and the way the carnjstic system works to blind people from what happens before the animals get to the slaughterhouses, during and after.

I recommend this book to vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and those considering not eating meat.
