When Quinn was told he was deemed fit to learn magic as an apprentice, he didn't know what to expect. He certainly didn't expect to be plunged into a world of politics, demons, monsters, petty drama, and angry primordial deities, all while being guided by an off kilter, rant-happy warlock, who has more secrets than Quinn has problems. Nothing he can't handle, right?

Did an especially good job with making Dale especially disgusting and the making ending antagonists fantastic and enjoyable, sounded nearly exactly as imagined for me.
A well written story well read

For the book itself, it's a great YA story. It's about magic people, and a young man learning magic, and it's more then he bargained for, you know the drill. I'd say the difference here comes from the visceral emotion, and the weirdly complicated and non-uniform magic. The characters all feel real and like they have lives outside of the story, which makes me feel for them when they're in danger. The magic feels like a part of life that's messy and complicated, like big important thing tend to be, rather then a skill tree in a role playing game. Also, excellent LGBT+ representation, we always need more of that in media for young people, especially in good media.
For the Audio , it's pretty good. I have some minor problems, such as a handful of awkward line reads. More pressingly, some of the character's voices seemed a little inconsistent, as in their voice would sound one way when they first appeared, and slowly change offer the course of the story. I don't think this was an intentional choice to reflect character growth or anything, I think the narrator just adjusted his preformence as he went, and they never went back to change anything. it's nit a big issue, these changes can take you out of it a little, but it's only a minor distraction, and the voices are always good for the characters.
And boy, some characters came alive for me like they had not before. Dale's voice was so perfect that I really got invested in her this time around, Kole sounds pretty much like I thought she would, and Asim I saw in a slightly new light from how I saw him on my last read. In addition, there were two characters (their names would be too much of a spoiler to mention here, trust me) I actively feared would have lame, over done voices. I have a pretty specific way I thought about them, and I assumed most people would default to reading them in a way that made sense on a surface level, but was horrible for the character. But yet, the naratur pulls it off. and it was glories.
Over all, the audio book lacks some of the professional polish I've seen else wear, but dose very well with the source marital, and I can highly recommend it.
