About this listen

Alone. Surrounded by monsters. Armed only with his fists... Time to fight.

Jack Rust was a disillusioned biologist with a PhD—almost. When an extraterrestrial AI calling itself the System invaded Earth and thrust it into a world of aliens, magic, and violence, Jack hoped to at least get some magic himself.

Nope.

Even worse, the System spawned a forest dungeon around him and a goblin in his face....

Armed with nothing but his fists, Jack must grow strong enough to survive hordes of monsters. He needs to return to civilization and find out what the heck is going on. He might even get magic—or not. Surprising himself, Jack discovers that violence is fun.

In this battle-ridden new world, Jack finds the life he always dreamed about. He won’t just survive. He will thrive.

Don't miss the start of this action-packed new LitRPG Apocalypse series from Valerios. Join Jack the brawler as he pummels everything that gets in his way with his fists on his road to mastery and power. It's perfect for fans of Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, and lovers of all things progression fantasy and LitRPG.

Progression Fantasy for Middle Schoolers

I’ll start off by saying I went into reading this book hoping for something similar to Primal Hunter and DOTF. It has some of the same elements oh how DOTF started and progression is just ok, nothing too special.

Overall 3 star rating due to how insufferable the MC is, and is why I won’t be continuing. MC is supposed to be smart, ~30 years old, and a PHD candidate, but acts and whines like a literal child. It’s ridiculous, laughable, and honestly makes it hard to want to side with the MC.

World building is subpar, characters are good, some of the comedy is funny, romance sounds like it’s written by a middle schooler as well. Story definitely had potential, but if you’re looking for a strong progression fantasy like the other top novels in the genre, this is not it.

At first I was like Meh, than I was like LMAO!

While the character development left me wanting.., the story was peppered with delightful humor that kept me engaged. One particularly hilarious moment was when the protagonist fibbed about his dao and chosen weapon. I had to pause and catch my breath from laughing so hard—I'm still chuckling as I write this! Initially, To freaking funny. Up to that point, I was questioning weather I was going to get the next book in the series. But now I am leaning towards getting it.

For those who nitpick every detail in LitRPGs and view everything with a critical eye, this might not be your cup of tea. However, if you're open to enjoying a light-hearted adventure, you're likely to be entertained.

Very unusual book in the end I liked it

When I started listening to the book i honestly struggled. The nartation is not bad, the written word is not bad. Little corny. Putting both together i was initially disappointed. Some where during the listen I started to enjoy the book. However when I started reading post this book I enjoyed it more.

Beware of the Is purple pronoun

In romance novels there's this thing called a propo pro pro now which is an overabundance of trying to describe a scene which can take Away from what you're trying to create in this case instead of a Romancing it's a fight scene and at times that just gets to a point where you sort of tuning it out It's wanting to skip ahead which is sort of a shame that because this is an amazing author Just needs to rain it back when it comes to this series concentrate more on the story less on the fights

Very repetitive

I'm about 7ish hours into the story so I'm hoping it'll get better. The MC has an almost phd but comes off as a middle school dropout more often than not, honestly i don't mind it. So far the story is decent, however the sheer repetition of the status screen is what I'm not enjoying. I understand it's a progression story and i get the need for it occasionally, but 7 ish hours in and I'm almost positive I've listened to the status screen for 30 of those minutes. Honestly like 2 or 3 times an hour and it isn't that much different. It feels like the author was just going for word count adding it in so very much. Overall it's a decent book so far and I'm going to listen to them both but I've caught myself rolling my eyes and complaining out loud every time the status screen comes up.

Not for me

Had some moments that were solid but I didn’t like the status structure and it was very campy for me. Not bad just couldn’t finish jt

Heavy YA vibes.

The narrator did a great job. No issues there. I like the plot and where it seems to be leading. Solid. Status reading isn't too excessive. The System is okay.

The characters are where I'm pretty iffy on. They all come off as kind of flat and as if they were written for a young adult book,

I liked the book. I'll read the next one. I know, however, that I will be rolling my eyes and sighing quite heavily when I do.

DAO OF THE FIST!

I loved every bit of this book. The growth of character is fantastic, as is the reasoning behind his pursuit. Jack's story is one I can relate to and I will consider myself fortunate to continue reading his adventures!
