About this listen

Chandra de Avenell might look like a golden princess, but she fights like a warrior, dreams a warrior’s dreams, and wears a warrior’s pride like a suit of armor. She wants to be strong, independent, and free. She has no use at all for a husband. Enter the man her father has selected for her. Jerval de Vernon takes one look at Chandra, and he wants her. After he saves her from a very bad situation, he sets himself to wooing her—not an easy task.

How does a man convince a woman he coerces into marriage to become a wife? To give him her loyalty and trust? Love is something he would like her to consider as well. But what if the wife has no intention of cooperating? Does he break her or finally give up to her?

Warrior's Song

Originally published as Chandra this book is the first of a four boo set. I like the fact that a woman can be a hero.

Immature lead female

This was one of my least favourite female characters ever. Chandra is selfish, immature and prideful. There were times when I wanted to slap her. I would like to respect her husband, but he never seemed to call her out for her selfish, thoughtless behaviour.

A classic Historical romance

This was fine. The narration was pretty good, not my favorite but I didn't want to rip the earbuds out of my ears.

TW/CW: Rape (not of the heroine), rape commited by the hero of the next book in the series, threat of rape to the heroine from various men, miscarriage, thoughts/threats of suicide, and assault.

This book and series was always on my radar, I think I even read book 2 years and years ago. So I wanted to read this first book. And it was fine, not great, not horrible, just fine.

This was also kind of weird, especially in the first half. I was wondering if there was something between Chandra and her father, with all the talk of his "rutting" and no one was better than her father, it was weird.

I didn't love that every time Chandra is trying to show her skill, she ends up not really showing off. There were many moments where she would go off and get into trouble instead of actually helping. It got old.

Also I didn't love how a difficulty between the hero and heroine would occur and then 4 months later would pass and their issue was resolved but we never saw how it was resolved.

Oh and I hated how Chandra is calling the guy who raped her friend/maid a friend by the end of this. Yea he saved you but he also raped your friend...what?!

Overall this was just fine. I'm curious where i will fall on book 2 when I read it.

Disappointed with the narrator!

The story was interesting but very difficult to follow due to the narrator. The narrator ran the sentences, and different characters within the story, together.

Great narrator

The narrator helps me choose the book. Anne Flosnik is an excellent narrator. I was not disappointed with her performance with this book at all. The author was trying to portray an independent woman who could hold her own as a fighter. Unfortunately she did not give this heroin a brain. I have a problem with stupid acting, self serving female characters in books who put many people in jeopardy because of their childish acts. If you want to portray an independent woman, then also give her a brain. Plus the second half of the book made it feel disconnected from the first half. I only gave 3 stars.

History and romance

If you could sum up Warrior's Song in three words, what would they be?

History and romance in one story.

What other book might you compare Warrior's Song to and why?

Any of Catherine's other historical romance novels and I plan to read the next one in the series.

Meh.

This is an older romance which features an unnecessary rape scene very early in the book. The heroine was at times outrageously prideful and in denial of the world in which she lived. She grew as a character, but it would have been nice to see more of that development sooner.
