Sounds like Mary Poppins reading erotica. *face palm*

I love Catherine but can't enjoy the story due to the narrator sucking all sexy out of the characters.

Pretty Good story terrible narrator. She sounds 100. Very much not sexy. Terrible. Ending was a bit rushed.

Narrator sounds like an old British Nanny

This book has such polarising reviews that I didn’t quite know what to expect, as with Cathrine Coulter you literally don’t know if you can pass the revulsion factor or not. In this case, I liked the story so much I finished it in one day, just couldn’t stop listening.
I didn’t much mind kidnapping and what follows after as it’s a part of the storyline for most of the bodice rippers (dashing Alfa hero is besotted with beautiful heroine, kidnaps her, forces her to submit though his skilful lovemaking and eventually wins her love) but the gang rape scene was totally repulsive and unnecessary, I just don’t understand why CC done it in such a brutal manner??
Apart from that, I really enjoyed the story, plot might not work for everyone as romance essentially is a fantasy world and as the famous proverb succinctly puts it “different strokes for different folks” .....

Not for everyone but I liked it

I loved the whole story. However, I find the speakers rendition of the women's voices to be very whiny and snotty sounding, which takes quite a bit out of my enthusiasm for listening.

good

I read this book many years ago and was very happy to see it on Audible so I could listen while knitting. The story is still what I remember, but the narrator is now on my "Skip it! if read by any of these Narrators List".

She speaks in high pitch whinny voice for all the characters but in LOW tone such that you need to substantially turn up the volume to hear the story.

Love the story HATE the Narrator

His desire for her occurred when she was in her teens and he promised himself that she would belong to him. Except she believed she was in love with her best friend, whom she grew up with. She planned to marry her best friend, but she was kidnapped the day before her marriage by him. Good story and narrative.

Writing multiple vivid tape scenes were that NOT NEEDED!!! Ugh disgusting! It could of been inferred, and had the same affect!!!

Seriously!!!

Couldn't finish this really screwed up "romance." Usually I like the plot line of resistance and then resignation and then love, with some serious physical chemistry along the way, but this story too easily glossed over rape, near-pedophilia, and physical abuse. I couldn't, in good conscience, finish it. The protagonist is a victim with Stockholm Syndrome; she resists the love interest for approximately a chapter before being reminded he was nice to her once a year ago, and he'd already ruined her eighteenth-century virtue, so it was fine to stop resisting and start the long, tedious, fall into weird love with a guy who professed to have developed interest in her because she looked like her mother who he had been in love with before her death. Not to mention, the love scenes aren't even that good!!!

Forgot to mention that the reader sounds like she's about 60. Her performance is fine, from a technical perspective, but I really struggled to believe it.

Most disturbing romance I've ever read

Beware. This book has several very descriptive rape scenes and is not a romantic story.

I am a big fan of Ms Coulters historical romances. The Devil's Embrace was a disappointing story for me. I do not like "bad guy wins" novels of any kind. Sorry, Catherine.

Disappointing
