About this listen

Gracie has never felt like this before. One day, she suddenly can't breathe, can't walk, can't anything - and the reason is standing right there in front of her, all tall and weirdly good-looking: A. J.

But it turns out A. J. likes not Gracie but Gracie's beautiful best friend, Sienna. Obviously Gracie is happy for Sienna. Super happy! She helps Sienna compose the best texts, responding to A. J.'s surprisingly funny and appealing texts, just as if she were Sienna. Because Gracie is fine. Always! She's had lots of practice being the sidekick, second best.

It's all good. Well, almost all. She's trying.

Funny and tender, Well, That Was Awkward goes deep into the heart of middle school and finds that even with all the heartbreak, there can be explosions of hope and moments of perfect happiness.

Critic reviews

"As per her usual blend of energy, wit, and genuine emotion, Vail has created a story that is at once delightfully gossipy, playfully ironic, and deeply moving." (BCCB, starred review)

"Heartwarming, funny, and tender ... Call it cute, call it clever - Vail fluently captures the spirit of today’s American middle-schoolers." (Booklist)

"Hilarious and heartfelt." (Kirkus Reviews)

Such an important storyline!

Hello!!! I would like to thank Rachel Vail for this super-Awesome-Romantic-Novel! Narrator was a little un-Enthusiastic about the story. Gracie Grant is the main character in this book and also is a giant role-model, Except the self-negative part of her. She has three best friends, Emet, Sienna, And AJ. Gracie has a crush on AJ. But AJ likes Sienna, Flirting involved just a fair warning. Okay spoilers but for real so funny:At the party Gracie told AJ one of those text messages she sent from Sienna’s phone but AJ wasn’t the other one on the other side, Either. Emet and Gracie had been flirting and having romance over Siennas and AJ’s phone 🤣. Sorry, just had to share that it is so funny. Riley is also a really mean girl but has some home issues too. Riley once “pretend barfed” on Dorin. Gracie’s sister also had died of getting hit by a car in case you don’t want your childeren listening to this i will write what happened-Bret was playing and accidentally kicked a ball across the street, And ran over to grab it, A car was coming so quickly they had no time to catch her. Later in the story it said she was a young woman learning how to drive. The car slammed straight into her, Knocking her out and unconscious. Her mom came and took her to the hospital but Bret had died in Gracie’s moms arms.-Such a sad story but now happy highlights! Gracie gets a tortoise! (Sadly that is the only happy highlight I can remember, Mabye check out everyone else’s reviews for more happy highlights)

10/10

It was emotional, flabbergasting and more I enjoyed it a lot! All the drama in the book doesn’t clash it stays together and that’s hard to maintain.

I love this author!

I have all of Rachel’s books and I was so happy to see this book on audible. The narrator had me dead the whole time because the way they would literally say “hahaha” was so funny LMAO!

The sweetest little crush story

I loved this book and thought it was beyond adorable and at times sad. But the banter and middle school angst felt genuine.
