About this listen

In the autumn of 1940, four children meet on a train. Behind them is London, under heavy aerial attack; ahead of them is a ship bound for the safe shores of Canada. Arthur has promised his mother not to let his little brother, Philip, out of his sight. Pippa and Dora are on their own: polar opposites, brought together by the adventure of a lifetime. But disaster strikes mid-Atlantic, and in the chaos one of the children makes a choice that will determine the course of their lives forever.

As the years pass and the survivors become adults - forging their futures and falling in love - they are still haunted by the events of that night at sea. It's not just what was lost that darkens their lives: what was rescued casts a long shadow, too. One of them has a terrible secret that they thought sank with the ship. But a secret is just a truth waiting to be revealed, and this secret could shatter everything.

A bit predictable

I sometimes wanted to smack Arthur on the head. Not all men are this dumb. I really enjoyed this book nevertheless. It had an innocent woman, a conniving woman, a decent albeit absurdly naive guy drawn in by sex, and a violently abusive freak following a typical abuse pattern. What more could you possibly ask?
Even though the story is old as the hills it was told in a different way keeping it new and interesting.

What was Rescued

The writing is just exquisite. A triangle from when they were children. Manipulations and deception. Trust Dora.

Crude, depressing, bitter tale of lust & stupidity

Woman and man both make the same mistake over and over again, driven by their lust and pitiful excuses. Depressing. Narrators are good with different voices.

Slow

This book was a little draggy and I think the guy was a little jerky that's all .

It was okay

I listened to this book via audible and the narrator wasn’t my favorite, I listened to another book by him and his voice is very annoying. It took away from the story a bit but overall I liked the book. It’s an easy, quick read.

I couldn't put it down. fascinating tale well told. having 2 narrators worked brilliantly. i found both readers good, but the man at times used a monotone that made him sound boted.

Mechanical voices

Although the story line was fine, I found that the actors' deliveries were done in strangely mechanical voices, with a kind of sing-song rhythm. It dettacted from the story.
