About this listen

Former Suffolk County cop Gus Murphy returns to prowl the meaner streets of Long Island's darkest precincts with a Russian mercenary at his back in the stunning second installment of Reed Farrel Coleman's critically acclaimed series.

Gus Murphy and his girlfriend, Magdalena, are put in harm's way when Gus is caught up in the distant aftershocks of heinous crimes committed decades ago in Vietnam and Russia. Gus' ex-priest pal, Bill Kilkenny, introduces him to a wealthy businessman anxious to have someone look more deeply into the brutal murder of his granddaughter. Though the police already have the girl's murderer in custody, they have been unable to provide a reason for the killing. The businessman, Spears, offers big incentives if Gus can supply him with what the cops cannot - a motive. Later that same day, Gus witnesses the execution of a man who has just met with his friend Slava. As Gus looks into the girl's murder and tries to protect Slava from the executioner's bullet, he must navigate a minefield populated by hostile cops, street gangs, and a Russian mercenary who will stop at nothing to do his master's bidding. But in trying to solve the girl's murder and save his friend, Gus may be opening a door into a past that was best left forgotten. Can he fix the damage done, or is it true that what you break you forever own?

FYI for Mr. Szarabajka

Asecinos is pronounced ah-seh-see-nos.

I'm impressed that you pronounced Gutierrez correctly. Thank you!

For the most part the narration was good. The female voices were pretty awful. For the most part narration should be men for male characters & women for female characters. The majority of my reviews are regarding my dislike of the narration. Overall, I believe Mr. Szarsbajka did well albeit the female parts are not so great.

This is a good book. I appreciate Mr. Colem's familiarity with New York state. The references to the area & the food makes me nostalgic. You left me craving a pie made in NY! You should try a sub from Jrek's if you haven't already. They are the best!

Good book

Loved the characters and fast moving story sad when it ended. Looking forward to the next Gus Murphy book and hope Keith Szarabajka narrates it.

Wish there were more!

I love the insights on losing a loved one, religion, and life. Witty and contemplative.

Overall a great story; but all wrong in one instance

The repetitive and boring assertion that Arnold Mason was a monster somewhat ruined an almost great story. It was never explained why the lost patrol destroyed the Cambodian village. Just as tha US Army lied and condemned the innocent Lt William Calley. I was there, in Vietnam. Despite The Congress giving our victory away when they never declared war to begin with, they sent us. Calley and his men wiped out a Viet Cong village where men women and children had killed his men. Likely the lost patrol did the same. I wiped out a village harboring Viet Cong so that medevac could take out a wounded Marine. I was a Cobra pilot. It was a war. The cowardly send us then condemn us.

Riveting

Mr Coleman is masterful in storytelling. I enjoyed all the characters; their quirks, mannerisms, and failings.
Well done.

Great if you like male fantasy crime novels

A better-than-average male fantasy crime novel. If you’re a certain kind of guy, it’s got all the ingredients you’ll like: an ex-cop protagonist, Gus, whom everyone loves and respects, with a well-deserved excuse for self-pity and plausibly valid reasons to receive and inflict violence (on purpose or inadvertently), and the graphic descriptions of the torture and murder of women and children that are evidently a requirement for all crime novels these days. Gus also has a smart and beautiful ex-wife and an actress girlfriend who “looks like Marilyn Monroe” and loves Gus truly madly deeply. The reader, Keith Szarabajka, is excellent. However, If you are a woman (ahem), or a guy who enjoys more nuanced, challenging crime novels, you might want to look for something else -- you are not the "intended audience" for this book.

Enjoyable relatable and a fun adventure

I enjoy the Guys Murphy series books. The characters are flawed but I feel relatable and real . It was a good mystery and detective adventure that kept me entertained throughout. I hope there's more books in this series so I know what happened next.
