About this listen

Miss Emma Wynn has spent the last year at Ashwick Hall under the protection of Lady Westcliffe. Her uncle and brother think her dead and must continue to do so until she attains her majority. She must prove she is a fit guardian to re-establish herself and protect her brother. When permitted to visit her friend, Lady Eagleton, she is drawn to the reclusive Mr Carne. She suspects, however, that some scandal is attached to him, and she cannot afford to be tainted by association.

Falsely accused of a heinous act, Mr Oliver Carne returns from India a broken man, his name besmirched and his career in ruins. He retreats to the estate his uncle left him in Cornwall, refusing all visitors. But when his neighbour, The Marquess of Eagleton, lures him from his self-imposed isolation, he meets Miss Emma Wynn and begins to realise he might have even more to lose if he doesn’t reclaim his honour.

Interesting storyline, good narrator

Interesting, well-written, clean regency romance. Very enjoyable. I'm glad I read and listened to this book.

A good one

I enjoyed the beginning of this. Intriguing potential back stories for at least three characters. The upbeat tone during interactions. A great start. But midway, and while still intriguing, a few minor things started to bug me. There were internal ruminations. And males turned crimson or blushed. It was okay perhaps for the young man but not grown men. I was sick of blushing in historical romances before this, and bummed to see it now carried over to men. Is there no other emotional response out there? Also, I would have preferred less time spent on the pregnancy and birth scenes with one of the women, and I had to fast forward through them. Had I known, I wouldn’t have bought the book. Still, I like this author. It’s an enjoyable story and worth listening to if you can breeze through some of the minor irritations. One side note is that stomach is used in place of the word womb.
