About this listen

At a Texas lake resort, swimming in romance, an enemy ice queen thaws right into her Hollywood happy ending.

Krista Kyle knew how hard it was to be a closeted lesbian in Hollywood. Unfortunately being out and proud could affect your career. But after 20 years as an award winning actress Krista was able to be her authentic self in a world where being someone else was the norm.

With an opportunity to buy a lake resort with her best friend, Krista creates a safe place where those that weren’t yet ready to live openly in public can come with their partners and girlfriends and be themselves.

When a sleazy journalist, known for outing people, finds out about the hideaway Krista offers to show her what the resort really means and uncovers a secret that changes them both.

This is the first book in the Lovers Landing Series where celebrities find their true love in the most unlikely people.

A Hollywood Lesbian Romance.

A great start to a new series by author Jamey Moody. Krista Kyle has been a closeted lesbian in Hollywood for 20 years. Now she’s out and visiting her best friend Krista at a Texas lake resort where they grew up and worked during the summers. Now they have the opportunity to buy it and build a safe place for lesbians to vacation and relax. Then a journalist known for outing lesbian actresses tries to book a week at the resort. Will Krista be able to get behind the fortress that Brooke has built around her heart. A story of friendship, new starts, and safe places. Great performance.

The audio is a little weird.

There were some points where lines repeat like multiple takes were left in. And in the final "time jump" chapter one of the characters names seemed to have changed from Brook to Melanie, so when that chapter started it was very confusing and made it seem like Krista and Brook broke up somewhere in the time jump and Krista was with someone new. And the time jump was confusing because the chapter is called "3 Years Later" the narrator clearly says "18 Years Later" (which is very confusing when Krista and Brook/Melanie's 18 year old Grandson is being introduced) then Krista and Brook/Melanie talk about how it's been 50 years.
And no disrespect to the narrator she seemed to do a fine job, but she seems an odd choice to voice characters who are primarily in their 40's and 50's, because she sounds much younger. For all I know she just has a young voice and is 40 or 50 herself. She just didn't really sound like it.

Really enjoyed!

I was excited to give this a listen since I knew how much I really enjoyed this novel when it was first released. *I was fortunate enough to have received a copy of this audiobook by the author... This is one of many of my all time favorite of Jamey Moody. I have read the book and enjoyed it so much so that I didn't know how I would feel about listening to it. But I enjoyed it has if I had sat down and read it myself. A wonderfully well written story. This story had all the elements that I enjoy. A great romance with little angst. The Narrator, Amanda Wrege was wonderful and a pleasure to listen too. She had a great book to work with. She was spot on! It was definitely as good as the book and it was nice putting a voice to all these wonderful characters. Well done 👍

People can choose their path

I have loved all of Jamey’s books so far and this book is no exception. I liked the change of characters with celebrities and the secret factor. Krista knows what it’s like to be on the verge of being outed. She has created a safe place for others to relax and be themselves and hold hands. You can tell Brooke must have gone through something in her life to write the articles she does. Krista sees her differently and wants to be friends and hopefully convince her not to write about Lovers Landing. I like all the hand holding and kissing and of course all the rest. Another wonderful love story by Jamey. This was a new narrator for me and I found it a little fast for me so I slowed it down a bit.

Great story!

I enjoyed the story but narrator stopped and started a phrase over at times. Take two!

Great.

I really enjoyed Where Secrets are Safe. I like the idea of trying to change someone’s mind with kindness and facts, rather than demeaning them. It worked out great in this book.

I like it

This story was fun. It was somewhat predictable, but nothing to complain about. That’s why we read romance books, right?
The narrator was “ok”. I like her voice, however if you take even a small break it’s hard to go back and listen to because the narrator doesn’t change her tone for different characters. If she would do this I would be more inclined to listen to more of her work.

Who is Melanie?

The story was ok, not great, but I've heard worse. The love story wasn't exactly believable and was a little too full of saccharine for my taste. That said, I was able to muddle through to the end of the audio book. The epilogue seems to be from a different book altogether. In the ebook the epilogue is 3 years later. The audio book says 18 years later... But is talking about events from this book happening 50 years earlier. Then the name of one of the characters changes from Brooke to Melanie. Who is Melanie?

Wonderful voice, Amanda Wrege

The reader for this book was excellent! The inflection in her voice and her enunciation was perfect. We listened to it in our car on a road trip and it was great. I often fall asleep listening to audible books but this one kept me engaged completely! Really enjoyed the story and can’t wait for the next in the series!

A Safe Place From Hollywood

I went into this one pretty blind. I swore I'd read a book by Jamey Moody before but apparently, I haven't. That didn't deter me though. I just featured the third book in this series in my weekly New and Notable post. I picked book one up on sale and decided to give it a shot.

The story in Where Secrets Are Safe is two-fold. There was a story about a place that Krista wanted to open so that her gay friends could come, be together, and not be "outed" for being gay. The other part of the story was a coming-out of sorts and a redemption-type story. I enjoyed both parts and thought that Moody did a good job making the story be about way more than just the women that were there and the place.

Where Secrets Are Safe was cute and definitely kept my attention throughout. My only complaint was that it seemed to be a bit "halted". What do I mean? I mean that it was written for text, not for audio. Now, a lot of people don't write for audio and it's fine. But in this one specifically, it seemed like there were a lot of "Krista said" "she said" type of speech patterns. Now, in some books this is fine, but for some reason in this one, especially earlier in the book it was a bit jarring for me. But as the book progressed there was more action and less talking so the pattern seemed to disappear a bit. I'm curious to see if as Moody continues this series - if that gets better or if that's just her writing style. Either way, I'm still going to pick the rest of this series up because (even though the ending of this had a "some years later" part - I'm curious where Moody wants to go with the series.

Diving into the audio, the first thing I noticed was that Wrege's narration was crisp and clear - so much so that it almost threw me off. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I may have left my headphones on too high listening to music - but the production quality was good and her performance definitely added to the book.

Overall, Where Secrets Are Safe was a fun and enjoyable book about friends, lovers, and a safe place to vacation away from the prying eyes of Hollywood and the media.
