Captain Sabine Fleischer is a skilled and dedicated US Army surgeon deployed to a combat hospital in Afghanistan. She is also one of the thousands of troops who are forced to serve in silence because of the military's anti-gay policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT)".

Usually driven and focused, Sabine finds that battles raging both inside and outside the perimeter walls are making it more and more difficult for her to deal with her emotions. Dealing with loss and mortality, lack of privacy, sleep deprivation, loneliness, and the isolation forced on her by Don't Ask, Don't Tell are all taking their toll. Plus, her long-term relationship with a civilian back home is quickly becoming another casualty of war.

Colonel Rebecca Keane is an enigmatic career officer who runs the surgical unit like clockwork. Well-liked and respected by those who work with and under her, she walks a fine line to preserve the military's chain of command while connecting with those under her care and supervision. Sabine knows the colonel is way off-limits but can't help fantasizing about her. Especially when she starts picking up unspoken cues - a stolen glance, a secret smile, an "accidental" brush of hands. Or is it just wishful thinking? After all, Rebecca's wedding ring shines almost as brightly as her deep blue eyes....

When I first read this book I was impressed by the authors writing. Listening to the audio version makes the story even better.

I’m always a little hesitant to read/listen to a story involving military but I have absolutely no hesitation recommending this story as a powerful example of military bearing, DADT, and incredibly engaging story. I was loathe to stop listening as I was very much captured from the beginning. Abby Craden did an amazing job and the voice of each character were clear and distinguishable. Her narration style made me feel the emotions and brought me to tears with Sabine and Rebeccah. Definitely recommend this story!!

Powerfully engaging from the first

The story started off a little slow but picked up in the 5 and 6th chapter. I enjoyed the story very much and my heart broke for the main characters regarding DADT.

I did catch an error or two but overall, a very good book. Abby Craden was fantastic as usual. You can't go wrong with her.

Great narration

This is only my second book by Noyes. I've become a big fan. I've o ly ever listened to audiobooks by Noyes but Craden is my favorite narrator of any of the audiobooks I've ever listened to. She does such an amazing job of inflection without over selling and realism without boredom. I cant wait to read more books by Noyes and listen to more books narrated by Craden. Great story and I listened to the whole book over two days... on to the next!!

I'm becoming addicted

I have not served in the military, so no personal experience, but EJ wove a very captivating story that from other reviews is very realistic. I’m eager to listen to Ask Again. As always, Abby is a wonder narrator.

Amazing book. Very well researched and written. Can’t believe the author lives Down Under and had never been in the American military. She has some good G2, only a couple things niggled at my brain and they could also be just shorthand for a civilian audience. She completely captured what DADT felt like. I would like to read a few pages of it to my colleagues at the Veteran’s Administration so they could grasp what LGBTQ Veterans have gone through and still do now, especially our Trans brothers and sisters. Trigger alert: The trauma scenes are viscerally written as well. If you have deployment trauma, just be aware of this. For me, the DADT stuff was very cathartic as it has now been awhile since it ended. I am a fan of EJ Noyes and sexy, narrator lady Abby Craden. Highly recommend!
