About this listen

Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels is having a bad week. Her live-in boyfriend has left her for his personal trainer, chronic insomnia has caused her to max out her credit cards with late-night home shopping purchases, and a frightening killer who calls himself "The Gingerbread Man" is dumping mutilated bodies in her district.

While avoiding the FBI and its moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Jack and her binge-eating partner, Herb, must catch the maniac before he kills again...and Jack is next on his murder list.

Whiskey Sour is the first book in the bestselling Jack Daniels series, full of laugh-out-loud humor and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Critic reviews

Dual voices add considerable interest to this debut novel....The production's conversations sound more like those of a radio play than a reading, and one gets the feeling that both actors are having fun. This is a fine series opener." ( AudioFile)

liked and will read more from this author

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It took me a while to get into the readers' style and voices. The voice of the female reader and I think author seemed to old for the character. And sometimes there were two actors reading different parts and then occasionally just one actor reading a part, so I was a bit confused by the style conventions of the production of the story. And the story was interesting, albeit violent and a bit graphic for my tastes about the violence.

However, in the end, it was so much fun to have a female protagonist who was tough and wry and funny and that made it worthwhile. I enjoyed the Chicago accents and the relationship between the female detective and her partner.

What three words best describe Susie Breck and Dick Hill ’s voice?

Susie's voice is tough, edgy and humorous and Dick's voice is oily, creepy and friendly

Amazing..

Well written, great dialog, good pace..... Enjoyed this book and can't wait to get the next one. Did not have a dull boring chapter in it.

Just JAck

Story is great. Descriptive enough about the murders to instill a little horror. Then it's nicely set off by some clever dark humor. I appreciate that Jack is mature and a little older . My only disappointment is that all the male characters' voices sound the same. It's somewhat distracting. I Will continue to listen to series. "Point worthy!"

Clever branding for the series

A good police procedural with clever branding. I wouldn't call it a mystery since the reader is highly exposed to the antagonist. There isn't enough rapid action for it to be a thriller, at least in my mind. Still, it remains interesting from beginning to end with engaging characters and compelling breadcrumbs for the investigation side of the narrative. I'll continue reading/listening to the series.

Light summer Mystery

Charters are likable and the interaction between charters is good. I will listen to the rest of the series.

Good mystery, great narration

Narration was good. Two narrators really worked well. I read part and listened to part. Narration added to my enjoyment. Main character is likeable and smart. She has sacrificed her personal life for her career. She is a Lt. and detective in violent crimes. This story has a serial killer. The story shifts POVs. The book is a mystery with suspense, humor, and great characters.

Great start to a new series for me

I know this series is old but I've just found it and I truly enjoyed this first book and I have high hopes for the series.

Keeps you Engaged..

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes..a good story, and entertaining book.

Any additional comments?

If you are looking for an entertaining detective novel, this certainly delivers. It is fairly graphic (primarily violence, not sexual).

Typical Ending

It’s very disappointing to see a potentially good book end with a hardworking female cop get screwed over not once but twice by the same guy. To add insult to injury she is depicted as a pushover again in the final chapters. If you’re in to make chauvinism this is your book. How about writing a well balanced story that targets all audiences and not just men.
