Unique but hard to like

This was a rough one. If you are sensitive to gore this book is not for you. The FMC is hard to like. She really only does for herself the entire book. So trying to understand her loving anyone is laughable. I get she is going through hell but goodness she is selfish. That was really distracting to me, maybe not for all with this kind of book. The story was unique and intriguing but you won’t like any of the characters. It was hard to even know who or what to root for. Really great performance by the narrator!!

Unsettling and entertaining

Talented narrator Helen Langford entertains the listener with a breathless and emotional performance for White Pines, the new cosmic-folk-Celtic-cult-fantasy-horror audiobook from Gemma Amor, the Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Dear Laura and Cruel Works of Nature.

The story is told in first person, which makes it even more personal, and follows a woman as she returns to her roots in a strange and creepy village. This is a dark, gripping, terrifying, and entertaining novel that will haunt your dreams!

The writing is sharp, powerful and vivid, the events are truly unsettling and the entire adventure is creepy and very atmospheric. I really don’t want to get into any more details because this tale of darkness and despair, strange creatures and unfortunate events should be experienced exactly as the author intended.

Helen Langford does a great job of bringing to life Megan, Matthew, other characters, and the terrifying events that our protagonists live through. Helen reads in a pleasant voice, she quickly finds a suitable pace for the story and keeps it constant throughout the more than nine hours of the audio production. Her British accent is just perfect for White Pines and her narration is quite enjoyable.

White Pines is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time! That’s because both the exquisite writing and the excellent performance have combined to create a really immersive narrative experience for me, as a listener.

I love the attention to details from the author, including the insightful names for each chapter and I’m really glad to have discovered Helen Langford as a narrator because she is very gifted.

okay, I'm out

Couldn't finish this one. Unlikeable, thinly-drawn characters who make dumb decisions in a plot steeped with the grotesque. I enjoy mythology and fairy tales and and can suspend my disbelief, but this one just had too much crazy going on.

Silent Hill vibes and twists, lore, wow

Absolutely love the work from Gemma Amor. Such a beautifully built burn from start to climax, and like another log to the flames the burn rises again. The depth and imagery created by her words are truly vivid and haunting yet never too much to lose the intended sight and idea. Listening had been far more enjoyable and immersed me into the island and mansion, into the views and tunnels. Clearly described, beautifully detailed, the story…brilliant. The narrator performs wonderfully as well. Great job to them both.

Great story

It started out with a bang hit a bit slow then ramped up to an exciting middle
And a satisfying ending. I love this kind of story. Mysterious and otherworldly and eldritch.

Wait…what??

I don’t even know what I just listened to!! This is one of the strangest books I’ve had on Audible. It started out with promise, but then the wheels came off the bus. This is not scary - well it is to think this story was even published - it’s just…weird.

The narrator was okay. She wasn’t given much to truly work with.

Luckily, it was in the Plus catalog, so I didn’t spend a credit.
SPOILER ALERT: I’d skip this one - unless your into bizarre time travel, different worlds, a giant, generations of women who willingly give their lives to the earth, and a woman who morphs into a tree. Yeah, weird!
