About this listen
Melissa Albert meets Twin Peaks in this supernatural thriller about one girl's hunt for the truth about her mother's disappearance.
In 1973, the 31 residents of Bitter Rock disappeared. In 2003, so did my mother. Now, I've come to Bitter Rock to find out what happened to her - and to me. Because Bitter Rock has many ghosts. And I might be one of them.
Sophia's earliest memory is of drowning. She remembers the darkness of the water and the briny taste as it filled her throat, the sensation of going under. She remembers hands pulling her back to safety, but that memory is impossible - she's never been to the ocean.
But then Sophia gets a mysterious call about an island named Bitter Rock, and learns that she and her mother were there 15 years ago - and her mother never returned. The hunt for answers lures her to Bitter Rock, but the more she uncovers, the clearer it is that her mother is just one in a chain of disappearances.
People have been vanishing from Bitter Rock for decades, leaving only their ghostly echoes behind. Sophia is the only one who can break the cycle - or risk becoming nothing more than another echo haunting the island.

Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning - and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development.

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

really solid ghost story
slow burner “found narrative” style tale that erupts into a really gripping combination of mystery and ghost story. loved the weaving of character testimony with “video evidence” (will translate really well to a movie, one day, i imagine). at the heart of it all the spook and gore, a really tender story of a mother’s love. performance was good (tho the switch back and forth between narrators was at first a little jarring, it fit very well as the story went on). overall, a really solid story!

innovative and thought-provoking
"Our Last Echos" is a refreshing departure from the usual literary fare, earning its four stars through its intriguing uniqueness. The novel presents a narrative that is both innovative and thought-provoking, weaving a tale that explores uncharted territory. The characters, while engaging, could use a touch more depth, but their journey through this distinctive storyline keeps you invested. The author's creativity shines through, and the world-building is commendable. While it doesn't quite reach the five-star mark due to minor character development issues, it remains a captivating and worthwhile read for those seeking a different literary experience.

Busy.. For teens
Strange story that left you hanging. Has the bones of a good story but confusing.

Intriguing build
Really enjoyed the way the story built and the difference between what the audience knows and what the characters know added an extra layer of delicious tension! My small nitpick is the pronunciation of the Russian, but I’m a little biased that way. :)

another great one
kate alice marshall just keeps surprising me - her books have been so so so good, and perfect for someone like me who’s a bit of a wimp tbh. scary, eerie and fun. the world she created here was intricate and spooky and will definitely call for a reread to catch things i’m sure i missed! narration was so good as well, really sets the audiobook apart.

Kept waiting to understand what was going on
It was very descriptive but just too hard to follow. I just couldn’t get into it. However it was well narrated.

Interminable
I do not know which was worst the story or the performance. The performance was so over the top that it was a distraction.
