About this listen

Paul Biegler – a science journalist and former doctor – has interviewed the world’s leading pain experts, along with people who have weathered their own chronic pain battles.

Chronic pain is the single biggest cause of suffering. And yet, pain that persists for more than three months is often unrelated to any physical injury. So why does it still hurt?

From neuroplasticity to sensitised nervous systems and associative learning, Dr. Biegler’s journey through pain clinics and studies debunks common myths about pain treatments and explores the pivotal recent brain science that explains why a nervous system holds on to pain pathways, and how to retrain the brain and the body.

Discover what we can learn from leading pain doctors and the pain clinics that offer no pain medications but still have excellent (and fast) results.

Critic reviews

"Biegler’s book is for those who want to understand the history of pain as well as the most recent breakthroughs in treatment... This is an inherently optimistic book: the author delves deep into the positive effect that mental strategies such as hypnosis can have on pain and quality of life." (Books+Publishing)

Sadly had to return

I started seeing a pain management specialist after listening to the first 10 minutes of this book, but very shortly after I had to stop it and decided to return it as the detail of and reliance upon experimentation on animals is something I'm neither interested in hearing or trust the results of. Aside from the inherent cruelty, animal responses to drugs, treatment, and behavioral studies does not translate to successes and applicable science for the human body and millions if not billions of dollars are wasted on repetitive and curiosity-driven lab work that doesn't help people. I SO wish this book would have relied solely or simply more on human experiences and studies. I am grateful for the idea of seeing a pain management specialist.
