About this listen

A groundbreaking mind-body protocol to heal chronic pain, backed by new research.

Chronic pain is an epidemic. Fifty million Americans struggle with back pain, headaches, or some other pain that resists all treatment. Desperate pain sufferers are told again and again that there is no cure for chronic pain.

Alan Gordon, a psychotherapist and the founder of the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, was in grad school when he started experiencing chronic pain, and it completely derailed his life. He saw multiple doctors and received many diagnoses, but none of the medical treatments helped. Frustrated with conventional pain management, he developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a mind-body protocol that eliminated his own chronic pain and has transformed the lives of thousands of his patients. PRT is rooted in neuroscience, which has shown that while chronic pain feels like it's coming from the body, in most cases it's generated by misfiring pain circuits in the brain. PRT is a system of psychological techniques that rewires the brain to break out of the cycle of chronic pain.

The University of Colorado Boulder recently conducted a large randomized controlled study on PRT, and the results are remarkable. By the end of the study, the majority of patients were pain-free or nearly pain-free. What's more, these dramatic changes held up over time. The Way Out brings PRT to listeners. It combines accessible science with a concrete, step-by-step plan to teach sufferers how to heal their own chronic pain.

An Amazing Book

This is an incredible book. I have learned a lot about chronic pain over the past few years and this is the most comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand resource I have come across on why chronic pain develops and how to treat it. Most of western medicine does a pretty terrible job treating chronic pain and the insights that developed from the Boulder study (which are presented in this book) really get at the heart of what drives the majority of chronic pain.

Putting aside the science that backs up the approach presented in this book, I was amazed at how well this book described so much of my experience with chronic pain. It was as if someone had written a book about my own journey with chronic pain and what I have come to understand about it through years of struggle. When someone who I have never met can describe my lived experience so accurately it is very clear that I am in the right place.

Lastly, I find it kind of crazy that Alan Gordon developed these techniques to get himself out of pain. That seems like some next level Jedi stuff, almost hard to believe! If you suffer from any kind of chronic pain you absolutely have to read this book.

Fantastic insight into the mind/body connection!

I was skeptical when my sister recommended this to me. After finishing the book and implementing the process, I am astounded at the immediate success I have had already. Read with an open mind and you may just get your life back!

Life-Changing!

This book is extremely well written and researched. It is easy to understand, and I love Alan’s sense of humor, especially with such a serious topic. I was initially skeptical, but I am now 100% convinced that my life will never be the same, after implementing the tools in this book. Thank you, Alan & Alon, for all of your incredible work to help people like me, who have lived with and “managed” our chronic pain for far too long.
