About this listen

Winter Maessen didn't ask for the gift of prophecy. She's happy being a freak - but now everyone thinks she's crazy. Or evil.

Goths aren't all the same, you know. Some are Christians.... Christians to whom God sends visions. Students at her university are being attacked, and Winter knows there's more than flesh and blood at work. Her gift means she's the only one who can stop it - but at what price?

Winter has a five-star rating on Amazon and has received rave reviews. The target audience for this book fits nicely into the same target audience as the Twilight saga. However, the books are completely different. This book has a very distinct Christian worldview, but it is not preachy. Its genre has been described as Spiritual Thriller, Christian Horror, Gothic Thriller, and Paranormal.

Interesting

I wasn't sure what this book was going to be like. It was a very interesting read. The reader did a pretty good job, and the plot keeps you on your toes. I wasn't sure if this was going to be religious, or paranormal? Its a great mix of the two.

oh god, really you can smell the Christianity

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Beware, Christian book. The author really crams that gospel message right down your throat. This is not a bad book, but had I known I wouldn't have purchased it. The main character has struggles that are a bit below her age group, anger issues, ego centric, issues with athority/ conformity, loner. These issues I would associate with high schoolers not college age girls. The "paranormal" aspect is being called prophecying, a gift from god. Has a good message if you like Preachy books, but I couldn't finish it

READ the description people BEFORE rating!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Depending on the friend...yes! The story itself was pretty good, better than most in the Christian Fiction genre. There were a few plot points that were left unresolved and the main character was a bit unbelievable in a few parts but overall I really liked it. I would rate it as on par with Twilight in terms of writing style, depth of character development, and plot cohesion. It is not one that requires (or allows) for further contemplation, but is still very enjoyable!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lindsay Zana?

ANYONE! The narrator was truly awful. She sounds very young and hasn't the talent or experience to attempt to give a different "voice" to each character. I almost didn't finish the book because the narration was that bad, but really wanted to see how the story ended so I suffered through it. If this narrator was a "must" for the author, she would be better served to just read the entire thing like a book, monotone straight through.

As for a specific recommendation, I think the narrator for the The Hollows - Rachel Morgan series would be a great fit. I think a more mature narrator would go a long way to giving Winter more credibility to her supposed "college" age.

Also there were a few technical issues. In a few parts of the narration, there was a doubled overlay from another part of the book (i.e. two different parts of the book playing simultaneously) for about 20 minutes total. This was more than a bit annoying. I think all occurrences were in Part 2, but I am not 100% sure.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I really loved the biblical "prophetic" slant verses the typical go-to "psychic" label. I have read a lot of Christian fiction and that is a first. It made me want to dig a little deeper into the gift of prophecy from a biblical perspective.

Any additional comments?

To the other reviewers...it would be extremely helpful if you would first READ THE DESCRIPTION prior to purchase and/or offering a negative rating. This is copied/pasted from the audible description verbatim:

"This book has a very distinct Christian worldview, but it is not preachy. Its genre has been described as Spiritual Thriller, Christian Horror, Gothic Thriller, and Paranormal."

It VERY CLEARLY states that it is in fact a Christian Fiction book. So for those who rated it negatively purely because they were not expecting a Christian theme should have their rating removed, as they offer an unfair bias that skews the ratings for those who are actually looking for enjoyable Christian fiction. Had those reviewers taken a mere 30 seconds to fully read the description to see what the book is actually about, they could have saved themselves from wasted time, frustration, and money. Then again, the description is not in an "audio format" as the book is, so for some...that may be asking too much!

Good vs. Evil Story Which Doesn't Ignore God

Would you listen to Winter again? Why?

I enjoy urban fantasies and battles between good and evil. Winter shows that it is possible to leave the patriarchical behind. The story has a strong woman protagonist and an activally involved God. It was refreshing.

Have you listened to any of Lindsay Zana’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I stopped trying to listen to this story while driving, I would get too interested in the story. The voices the narrator used easily distinguished between characters, although some were annoying to me.

Any additional comments?

The story occasionally feels like an embarassing cliche, but only occasionally. The character development was believable. Some of the conflict resolution was a bit too pat, but fit within the genre.

Great story for Christian suspense lovers

Winter is a new Christian, but she's not your ordinary Christian. First, she's Goth. Second, she's having strange moments of deja vu that lead to full-blown prophecies. There's someone out there, though, that desperately wants Winter and her gift out of the picture.

Well-paced and truly suspenseful, Winter has a rich setting and strong characters. The dual story line is woven together quite well, revealing bits of Winter's past along with present action.

The audio is not typical of most audiobook readings, from what I understand. I haven't actually listened to that many. This one, I know however, is read by a girl with an acting background. She has a voice that I thought matched very well with the character of Winter and brought a lot of emotion to the reading.

BTW--those who have given this book poor ratings due to Christian content--how about READ the description instead of griping about content that is CLEARLY labelled.

Veiled attempt at christian proselytizing

Would you try another book from Keven Newsome and/or Lindsay Zana?

Keven Newsome - No

Has Winter turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Any additional comments?

Don't try to pass born again christian proselytizing off as supernatural horror.

Intriguing story, Great narration

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and thought the narrator did a great job displaying each character. There is even some background music to accompany the crucial scenes which flow extremely well together. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

What utter rubbish!!

What disappointed you about Winter?

Winter is a self absorbed individual with the personality of a 13 year old spoilt brat.

What was most disappointing about Keven Newsome’s story?

The story did not flow. It jumped all over the place. Sometimes the characters found themselves in situtations and the listener does not know how they managed to get there.

What didn’t you like about Lindsay Zana’s performance?

Really bad voice changes for various characters. Especially Winter's spoilt brat and Summer's blonde bimbo voices.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Extreme irritation.

Any additional comments?

I copy my audiobooks onto CD's but threw them straight into the dustbin after finishing the audiobook!! Music was also distrating and did not suit the story at all.

no just this one

Would you be willing to try another one of Lindsay Zana’s performances?

no

What character would you cut from Winter?

all of them. i just didn't get this book.

From the title and summary it seem it would be a great book . It wasn't my cup of tea . I found it to be a waste of a credit.
