"They say the Jackal Man lives in that house...."
Months after a family is forced to flee the beachfront property on 100 Winthrop Road, three young travelers lost outside of Cutler, Maine find themselves taking shelter in it. Strapped for cash, the three of them spend a night in the house, wondering why the lovely old building has been left abandoned.
They don't have to wonder for long.
Strange things take place in the empty house. Noises come from behind the walls, and its occupants feel as though they're being constantly watched. The townsfolk are quick to warn them away from the property, sharing with them bits and pieces of its terrible history.
But by then, it may already be too late. Winthrop House has a mind of its own, and the entities that dwell there won't rest until they have what they want.

My only complaint is that this story is a bit shorter than some of the others, and lacked just a touch of the depth Ibsen’s other novels provide. It seems like some of the buildup of supernatural events was truncated, compared to his other works. Still, the overall story is quite enjoyable.
Joe Hempel delivers another great performance. He is quite at home in the horror genre.

It's one of those places that the locals know very well to steer clear off and have heard more stories than they can count, resulting in all of them trying to warn the friends to stay clear of the house.
Will they?
Usually, I will listen to audiobooks when going to sleep; there were two parts in there that caused me to hit pause and switch to something lighter for the night, as I wasn't quite ready to be haunted by my own house in my dreams. It is that good - which is in part because of the writing, but also in large part due to the narration. Joe Hempel does a great job taking the narrator on this trip with these three friends, balancing between casual conversations, eerie moments, tension or even the occasional moment of light hearted fun.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review, but this had no influence on my opinion.
What an eerie story - and great narration!
