Publisher's summary

Standing up to Victor was only the beginning.

Three weeks ago, Lola put her soul on the line to save her sister and stop an abusive blood mage from making himself a god. But while she managed to derail the worst of Victor’s plans, the rest of the world still sees her old master as the hero. To make matters worse, the Nightmare King Alberich has entirely escaped his prison and is now leading the Wild Hunt on a rampage of fear and chaos across the skies of Europe.

With Alberich playing the villain, it’s only a matter of time before Victor convinces all of humanity that his abusive magic is their only hope. Lola’s not about to let him get his dirty hands on that kind of power. But while she’s free to fight him, Simon and the Black Rider are still trapped under the blood mage’s boot. Lola will have to break them both out before she can take Victor down, but her former master’s plans are far from finished. He’s playing a game none of them can predict for a prize no one yet understands, and once all of his pieces are in place, the future of the world will hang on the edge of a golden sword.

Yet another perfect delight of the DFZ novels

Like every book set in the DFZ before it, this one does not fail to thrill! My only complaint is that it didn't last longer.

Another good DFZ series

I am enjoying all the series that’s in the DFZ universe. This is another good one. I admit, though I’d like to see some more stories regarding our dragons. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Another fun book in our favorite magical city

Rachel Aaron has sure hit her stride. The Changeling series is so fun!

Lola is a fairy changeling who's agreed to do a blood mage's dirty work in exchange for keeping her monster tamed, while still trying to keep everyone around her as safe as she can. This book continues the story of what happened when she fights the mage in his plot to take over.

I like Lola, up against impossible odds and still fighting for others and for herself. I like her coming to terms with all of the parts of herself. I like the friends she makes by being decent.

It ends in another cliffhanger, as happens in trilogies, so now I can't wait for the next one!

Loving the series

I am continuing to enjoy this world and I’m loving the intersection of my favorite characters from the heartstrikers chronicles

Better than the first one in the series

I think this book helped the series. It really leaned into the fight between the MC and the antagonist, as well as set up how difficult the next fight in book 3 will be. The relationships laid out in the first book were maintained appropriately, and expanded a bit on how the other political powers in the city interacted with the MC.

Overall this book was a great addition to the series, and I'm now on board and want to see where it goes from here.

Recommended.

More of the doppelganger

Wish the doppelganger was in the story more. She acted how I had hoped the lead would. well until like the last chapter when she started to back the part.

The small references to prior books character was nice and hopeful for more in next book. Feel sorry for DFZ, she really being taken advantage of.

Overall was good, just wish Lola got her mojo quicker.

A fun romp but I’m not sure we needed a middle book in the series

It doesn’t really progress the plot in a way that we needed before the finale but it’s nice to visit the world and characters

White Rabbit - Feed your head

I am a HUGE fan of Rachels. She weaves an amazing story and I have never been disappointed by her work. While this one isn't my favorite novel of hers, or my favorite DFZ instalment, I still found it to be fantastic. Its very unique and I can never predict whats going to happen.

I like what she has done with the fairies and how they interact with her magic system and the fit pretty seamlessly into this world and its rules. The main message rang loud and clear - you have control over who you are at all times.
